When are y’all starting obedience and agility/S&C work with your search dogs? Curious to see whether current-day practices still match the reported data from ~20 years ago.

TLDR: A 2007–2008 survey of 177 U.S. search-dog handlers found that obedience generally began earlier than agility, reported active-equipment use increased with dog age, and more weekly training was associated with certification.

Have y’all ever noticed any meaningful performance differences between single- vs. dual-purpose dogs?

TLDR: Single-purpose and dual-purpose narcotics teams showed no significant differences in target detection or false-alert outcomes, although the study did not establish equivalent performance.

Do y’all like to feed before or after scent work, and have you ever noticed your dog perform differently depending on when they last ate?

TLDR: Eating breakfast before testing reduced false alarms without significantly changing hit rates, overall discrimination, response bias, or session duration.

Have you noticed your dog consistently favoring one direction when they first encounter a track?

TLDR: Experienced tracking dogs with no prior directional-discrimination training followed the track-layer’s direction on ~61% of trials when introduced at a 90° angle to the track midpoint, but this was not reliably better than a random guess.

Thank you, ATK9.

Attending as a vendor and classroom attendees allows us to dial in and learn even more about what you do, and how we can help you.

At Muscatatuck Training Center we got to sit next to handlers who do this for a living and see how the work really gets done.

Our biggest win was the conversations.
Board members, attendees, vet med experts, and handlers of active working K9s and wounded K9s all took time to tell us what their dogs need.
A lot of them want to help us find solutions through our ongoing research. That’s fuel to our fire heading into 2027.

Thank you both for the work you do, and for being a real one.

A BIG thank you to @essek9collective
You partnered with us at the end of 2025 and encouraged us to be at this event.
You believe in what we do, in the results our products are getting, and in the bigger goals behind our mission.
That means a lot to us. WAY more coming.

And to @atk9usa : The organization, the communication, and the care you put into making this event a success showed all week. Thank you for having us, and for the great conversations.

To everyone we talked with between the vendor booth and the class sessions: we can’t wait to work more with you.

Onward.

When your dog hits a track, do they usually commit to a direction immediately or work back and forth before deciding?

TLDR: Dogs appeared to determine track direction by comparing consecutive scent impressions and following a directional odor gradient, rather than the physical orientation of individual footprints.

How much have y’all seen changing or inconsistent wind conditions affect your dog’s ability to locate the source?

TLDR: Scent-adsorbing clothing did not prevent SAR dogs from locating hidden subjects, while variable wind was associated with longer search times.

How are y’all typically presenting target odors during training?

TLDR: Dogs trained with variable odor mixtures maintained target detection across familiar and novel backgrounds, while target-only training did not reliably transfer to complex mixtures.

How many footsteps does your dog usually work before deciding which way the track goes?

TLDR: Trained dogs could accurately determine track direction from just five sequential footsteps, but performance fell to chance with only three.

Here’s this week’s recap!

Unrelated fun fact: ~95% of the time, circle pits run counterclockwise.

Go bite somebody. See y’all at ATK9 next week 👀

Shelter, rescue, and foster folks: what changes do y’all notice as dogs begin settling into their new/temp kennel life?

TLDR: Wearable sensors detected disrupted nighttime rest after shelter intake that improved over two weeks but did not fully return to pet-dog levels.
