Community Fundraiser Monday, July 14th in Presque Isle for Matthew Traub👨‍🎓👨‍🎓👨‍🎓
WHO'S MATTHEW TRAUB?
He’s every small-town kid behind the scenes.
If you’ve ever had a pizza or burger at the PI Pub, you've probably seen him: quiet, respectful, working in the kitchen alongside his dad. He just graduated from high school in Minocqua and got into Michigan Tech’s engineering program! He’ll be the first in his family to go to college.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? ISN'T COLLEGE A PRIVILEGE? WHAT ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS?
We’re doing this in the spirit of small towns everywhere, where we look out for each other and level the playing field when we can. LUHS scholarships go to those with stacked extra-curriculars. For many kids from Presque Isle – aka the tundra kids, the bus bunnies – sports and clubs aren’t an option.
We are so lucky to live, work and play in such a beautiful area! But not everyone is on vacation.
HOW MUCH DOES HE NEED?
Michigan Tech costs about $60k/year for room and board. Matthew earned around $30k in scholarships and reciprocity and has saved $16k working nights. We’re trying to raise the final $15k to send him off strong.
WHAT CAN WE STILL DO?
Show up and support him!
🎓 Monday, July 14 – 4PM, American Legion, Presque Isle
Most places in town are closed anyway! Come for the delicious food, live music, raffles, and a small-town sendoff for someone you may not have met, but has been working hard behind the scene. In 1993 I went on a cruise with my family and met an ‘older’ boy from Georgia who was attending a frat reunion on the ship. When I got back home I wrote him a letter telling him I was ‘probably going to marry him’. I was seventeen (and a precocious little thing apparently) but over the years we actually did keep our friendship going through land lines, then emails, blackberries, then cell phones and facebook, with the occasional Packer game or vacation meet-up. Three years ago he finally came to Wisconsin (all the way up, not just halfway to GB) and well, it seems 17-year old me knew a thing or two. It’s been peas and carrots ever since.
