The narrative of “My Notes on Mars” proceeds through indirection, association, and surprise-making a world in which ordinary life-or “life on earth”- becomes a dream of life. The characters go in search of emotional and intellectual resolution, only to find more questions. The gift to the viewer is a pleasurable awareness of the aspects of life we understand the least: breakdowns in love, our capacity for self deception, and the elusive pursuit of joy.

If you’re at BFI, the film premieres on October 16th. Also look out for screenings in Warsaw, São Paulo, Budapest, El Gouna, Valladolid, and other festivals this fall.

The last two images are: the alps in Austria which is the site of the inciting incident. And of the Salk Institute (1965) by Estonian Architect Louis Kahn who wrote of the paradoxes of light, which I believe apply to this film: “I sense Light as the giver of all presences, and material as spent Light. What is made by Light casts a shadow, and the shadow belongs to Light.”

“Future Tense” directed by Jenna Cato Bass will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the centrepiece program. #tiff2026

I’m very grateful to Kiva Reardon who put me across Jenna’s work shortly after we met at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Los Angeles was on fire, and I was entering my mid 30s, and reading Octavia Butler’s 1993 novel “Parable of the Sower” set in a 2020 in which society has largely collapsed from climate change and wealth inequality. I was asking myself why a novel from thirty years ago had more to say about how we live now than most of the movies I was seeing. Jenna Cato Bass’s work fills that cinematic gap. She employs genre filmmaking to represent the injustices of the past and present and to imagine our evolution. I’m very proud to be an EP on this movie.

“In a volatile near-future in which tourists use time-travel to escape to the past, a couple’s relationship is put to the test when one of them decides to change history.”

LATE FAME written by Samy Burch and directed by Kent Jones is in theaters August 7th. It stars Willem Dafoe, Greta Lee, and Edmund Donovan.
