Creating a character is calling in a ghost. Sometimes they stay with you. Change you. And you inevitably change them. The performance lives in the estuary between that spirit and you.

Trigorin was a ghost I had always dreamed of calling in. Ever since I sat in my mentor’s office at 20 and looked up at an old black and white photo of the writer being held by Arkadina, both of them trapped in a doomed relationship. It felt like it was my destiny to play him.

So, now, as I say goodbye to this character, here’s a little excerpt from our play Dirty Bird by @whithertford produced by @twentysomethingsnyc

What happens to Hollywood when the mass audience it was built for no longer exists?

Daniel Bessner and Neal Bledsoe join me for Part One of a conversation sparked by Daniel’s new book, IMPERIALIST REALISM, about an entertainment industry facing a radically different world than the one it was built for.

I know it can feel inevitable. Like the technology is coming no matter what. Like there is nothing to be done.

I am telling you: this is the thing to be done.

Almost no union on earth has AI protections as specific and enforceable as what SAG-AFTRA just negotiated. A 2024 global survey found only 20% of unions worldwide had any AI language at all. Most of it says “consult us.” Ours says prove it — or pay. Uncapped damages for synthetic performers. No other union anywhere has that.

A dedicated staff, volunteers, committee members, and working actors went into a room and came out with language that the most powerful technology companies in the world now have to live with.

A vote for this deal is not just a vote for SAG-AFTRA. It is a voice in a chorus of dissent against the erasure of human performance.

There’s a lot of noise online about AI in the new SAG-AFTRA deal. Some of it is legitimate concern. Some of it is spin.

Here’s what the contract actually says — seven provisions, one architecture, the facts plainly.

The contract doesn’t ask “can AI do the job?” It asks “why should AI take the job when a human could do it?”
