you search and search to find your place. your people. your purpose. you skim your knees. but you build scar tissue. and unbeknownst to me it was going to hit me like a tidal wave august / sept of 2026. i got to meet the culmination. everything ive spent my life chipping away, building, curating, fucking up, finding lightening in a bottle… it all arrived for this moment. to be embraced, aligned, challenged, humbled… and to find a proving ground to trust my work. and myself. and for an audience to overwhelmingly respond to the dna and veinwork. brooklyn resuscitated me. the streets, the trains. they all whispered to me every day. every walk. inside those rehearsal rooms we risked, failed, fought, loved, succeeded… all of it. to witness aj and river do the fourth act for the first time. to watch mary dig deep masterfully. to watch trevor play. to see fiona shed her makeup for the first time. for the last dress rehearsal to force the entire audience of producers, designers to jolt to our feet at bows. screaming, sobbing. i lost my voice that night bc i coached this gang w/ every fucking fibre of my being. best i knew how. i put my whole soul into this. that’s why theatre matters. there’s not traceable ROI other than thee process and how it changed you. it’s anti-corporate. punk. i’d do it 100 times again. we built a team. we bet on each other. so passionately. to give life to ten characters all searching to not be alone. cost something. it has to. to be worth it. much was put on the alter. the experiment worked. the point in life isn’t to accumulate accolades. but it’s to learn as much as you can and then when it’s your turn, to pass the baton to the next generation. to inspire them in such a way that you’re forever linked. to send the elevator back down. river was 16 when they saw me direct chekhov. and almost a decade later they passed it forward to the next batch of artists. that’s the answer to the test. core memories. for the vault. what a lucky guy i am. endure. EXTINCTION. thank you brooklyn. and thank you anton. can’t wait for the next.

Daniel Bessner and Neal Bledsoe on a radical idea for fixing the audition process: what if actors were actually paid to self-tape?

When casting can request 1,000 auditions at virtually no cost, Daniel argues that there’s little incentive to be selective. Actors spend hours preparing tapes that may only get seconds of consideration.

As he puts it, casting can start to feel like Tinder: swipe right or left and move on.

Requiring an investment in the people auditioning could mean fewer tapes, more serious consideration, and a process that respects the time of everyone involved.

But Neal points to another cost of self-taping: the loss of community. Actors can audition from anywhere, but there are fewer waiting rooms, conversations, relationships and opportunities to actually meet each other.

If we want acting to remain a viable profession for people who don’t already come from money, maybe the industry has to start investing in its professional class again.

Daniel Bessner and Neal Bledsoe join me for Part One of a conversation sparked by Daniel’s new book, IMPERIALIST REALISM, about an entertainment industry facing a radically different world than the one it was built for.

The shared mass culture is disappearing. Audiences are increasingly fragmented. Moviegoing has changed dramatically. And movies and television are now competing for our attention with content made 90 seconds at a time.

So what happens to Hollywood when the old model stops working?
