All dreams are valid. But sometimes you just need a little push.

One of the challenges faced by young women interested in tech is the unavailability of resources to make their tech dreams come to life.

Through our initiative, Because She Can is making dreams come true.

Last year 5 women got a step closer to reaching their goals in Tech. We donated laptops to Samira Awal, Barbara Boadu, Maame Yaa Serwaa Bonsu, Fatima Alhassan and Gertrude Amoakohene to support them in their dreams.

These women didn’t own a working laptop and relied on their phones, faulty or borrowed laptops to learn new skills, build a portfolio or complete their final year projects.

Couple of months after receiving their laptops they have been able to complete school smoothly, and land internships & full-time roles in Technology.

This year, we are asking you to support us in making a bigger impact by donating to help us reach our goal of $5000. Your support for the DFWWC project can change the life of an underprivileged woman today.

Join us make their dreams a reality by donating.

We did it. 🎉

Today, Because She Can is celebrating 20 incredible women who completed the Mentor Preparation Program in partnership with Digi-Equal Africa and the CoalitionforDigitalEquality.

20 women. 5 workshops. 3 months. One community that will last far beyond this program.
These women showed up. Every session, every exercise, every uncomfortable conversation, every role play, every case study. They did the work and they did it well.
They came in as women in tech with experience worth sharing.
They left as mentors.

From building confidence and beating imposter syndrome, to learning how to set boundaries, raise their visibility and practise mentoring in real time. This cohort went through something real and we are so proud of every single one of them.

A special congratulations to each of our 20 mentors. Your certificates are earned. Your seats on the Digi-Equal Africa platform are ready. And the women you will go on to mentor are lucky to have you.

We also want to take a moment to thank the people who made this partnership possible.

To Eunice and Wendy at Digi-Equal Africa and the CoalitionforDigitalEquality. Thank you for trusting Because She Can to deliver this program. Your vision for increasing the number of female mentors in African tech is one we are proud to be part of. We hope this is the first of many collaborations.

To FlourishHub Uganda, thank you for bringing us into your world and trusting our mentors to support your startup teams. Watching those sessions happen was one of the highlights of this entire program.

And to our brilliant facilitators — Otema Yirenkyi, Bella Amfo, Mae Zynenwartel, Mercy Dufie Boateng and Kweyakie Blebo. Thank you for pouring your expertise, your energy, and your hearts into every session.
This is what it looks like when women in tech invest in each other.
We are just getting started. 🌍

Because She Can takes Sweden, Pt. 2 🇸🇪

Currently in Uppsala, Sweden, exploring research collaborations focused on creating more pathways for African women into AI research and PhD programmes.

From introducing young girls to their first lines of code to creating opportunities at the highest levels of technology and research, we’re slowly building the pipeline we once dreamed of.

Five years in, and there’s still so much more to build. 🥹💜 by @becauseshecan_

After celebrating the commitment, growth, engagement and progress of our mentees, we are excited to unveil:

Esther Dankwah Affum as our Overall Best-Performing Mentee of Because She Can Mentorship Cohort V (Ascendency). 🎉🎉🏆

Esther stood out through her consistency, willingness to learn, resilience and dedication to making the most of every opportunity.
From navigating the challenges of deploying her fraud detection model to gaining clarity around personal branding, professional visibility and career growth, Esther showed us what it means to keep learning and keep moving forward.

Her journey also reflects something bigger.
She was mentored by Fatimah Alhassan Wayo, a former beneficiary of Because She Can’s Code Bridge program, in 2021.

A beneficiary became a mentor.
A mentor supported Esther.
And Esther is now being celebrated for her own growth and excellence.
That is the ripple effect we believe in at Because She Can. 💜

As part of this recognition, Esther receives:
💻 A MacBook Air

We hope this prize supports her as she continues building, learning and pursuing her goal of becoming a Senior Data Scientist in FinTech.

Congratulations, Esther Dankwah Affum 🎉🎉! Your story reminds us that when women are given access, support and opportunity, the impact can travel much further than we imagine.

And to Fatimah Alhassan Wayo, our mentors, facilitators, partners and everyone who continues to invest in women in technology, thank you for helping make these stories possible.

Because She Can, so can I.💜

The overall best-performing mentee is a woman who keeps trying until it works.

She is a mentee from the Data Science/Analytics track who believes in pursuing her goals with full conviction. When something does not work on the first attempt, she tries again and again and again.
That persistence became one of the defining parts of her experience during Because She Can Mentorship Cohort V (Ascendency).

For her final project, she built a Fraud Detection Model designed to identify suspicious mobile money transactions.

Using:
🐍 Python
📚 pandas
🤖 scikit-learn
🌐 Streamlit

She worked on a machine learning solution that could help flag potentially fraudulent transactions before more people fall victim.
But the project was not without challenges.

Deploying the model through Streamlit pushed her through several rounds of errors, debugging and trial and error. With guidance and persistence, she eventually got it working.

And that became one of her biggest lessons:
Moving from a notebook to something functional requires both technical knowledge and resilience.

Through the program, she also gained clarity around personal branding, professional visibility, personal excellence and accessing opportunities through open source.

Her goal is to become a Senior Data Scientist in a FinTech organization and continue developing her fraud detection project into a fully implemented application.

Soon, we will share more of her story and reveal why she stood out in BSC Mentorship Cohort V.

You have heard how Fatimah became part of the Because She Can story. Now, let us talk about the woman she has become.

Meet Fatimah Alhassan Wayo, Software Engineer turned Product Lead and the mentor behind the overall best-performing mentee of Because She Can Mentorship Cohort V (Ascendency).
Fatimah started her career after graduating with a degree in Computer Science, completing her National Service at PCES, a software company that builds solutions for financial institutions.

That opportunity became a full-time Software Developer role, where she spent over three years building and maintaining software across different projects.
Over time, she took on more responsibility, leading development work and teams.

It was during this stage that she grew beyond writing code. She learned how to take ownership, work with people, and lead projects from idea to execution.
Then came the MEST Africa AI Startup Program, where she worked on products across transportation, informal retail, language, and healthcare.

The experience introduced her to customer discovery, product development, AI integrations, pitching, and the questions that come before the code:

1. What problem are we solving?
2. Who are we solving it for?
3. And what does a useful solution actually look like?

Today, Fatimah is a Product Lead at Omaya Care, working on a maternal healthcare platform designed to help mothers stay connected to the care they need after childbirth while helping healthcare professionals and hospitals follow up without adding to their workload.
The platform uses automated voice calls and WhatsApp to make postpartum follow-up more accessible and consistent.

Her own words capture the evolution of her career:

“My journey has gone from learning how to build software to learning how to build products and understand the problem behind them.”

And this is the kind of perspective she brought into her mentorship relationship with her mentee.

Fatimah Alhassan Wayo didn’t just bring technical experience.

She brought the perspective of someone who has navigated the transition from engineer → team lead → product builder → product leader.
And now, we are getting closer to revealing the ment by @becauseshecan_

What happens when one woman receives an opportunity?

Sometimes, she becomes the reason another woman believes she can do more.
BecauseSheCan’s impact is not limited to one program, one cohort or one success story.

In 2021, Fatimah Alhassan Wayo was a beneficiary of BecauseSheCan’s Code Bridge program, formerly known as December for Women Who Code.
Code Bridge supports women and girls across Ghana who are developing an early passion for technology but may not have access to essential resources, including laptops. These young women and girls have already shown their passion through the work they have done so far. What they often need is the opportunity and support to go further.

Today, Fatimah is giving back as a mentor in Because She Can.
One of the mentees she supported was in the data science track whose persistence and commitment stood out throughout the program.

This is what a ripple effect looks like:
A beneficiary becomes a mentor.
A mentor supports another woman.
That woman grows in confidence, skills and capacity.
And one day, she may become someone else’s opportunity.
The impact continues. ❤️

Soon, we will be unveiling the Overall Best Performing Mentee of Cohort V.

And this story is only beginning.
