I’m Becca, a lifelong fangirl and Severance superfan. Like so many other fans, I connected with the show at a moment when I was questioning my relationship with work, identity, and who I was outside my “dream job.” Its themes of autonomy, burnout, and the emotional cost of our careers felt less like fiction and more like a mirror.

After visiting Bell Works, the real-life Lumon HQ, for a fan event earlier this year, I became fascinated by the connections between Kier, PE and our own world and how many of the show’s filming locations you are able to visit for free or low cost. I decided to hit the road with friends (and my dog Fiona) to explore the actual locations behind Severance: from Minnewaska State Park Preserve to Eng’s Restaurant to Phoenicia Diner to Nassau Community College and others. What I found was bigger than filming spots: these places reveal how the show taps into our anxieties about work, capitalism, and control, and how fans are reshaping local communities through tourism and shared connection.

Now I’m bringing that journey to you.

Join me on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube every Tuesday and Thursday for Set In The Reel World: Severance Edition. We’ll go beyond the screen to uncover hidden symbolism, explore the real-world impact of the show, and help you craft your own Severance-inspired road trip while we wait for season three.

On the next episode of Set In The Reel World, we explore downtown Kier — aka Beacon, New York. While Severance rarely shows the outside world, season one offers brief glimpses. In episode two, the Hall of Records appears during Mark’s encounter with the Whole Mind Collective — a grassroots movement advocating for the rights, autonomy, and reunification of severed workers. Their name reflects their core belief: that people deserve access to their whole selves — memories, identity, and consent — rather than being split into “innie” and “outie” versions. The Whole Mind Collective draws inspiration from real-life social and labor movements, blending recognizable protest strategies and rhetoric with contemporary concerns about corporate control and the erosion of worker autonomy.

Beyond the familiar scenes from the show, downtown Beacon is full of wonderful local businesses — from standout restaurants and thoughtfully curated consignment shops to even a spa — making it a destination worth exploring long after the Severance sightseeing ends.

Special shoutout to @looseends.us, @kitchen.coffee.beacon, and @blackbirdattic!

In this episode of Set In The Reel World: Severance Edition, we venture into Minnewaska State Park Preserve to visit Awosting Falls, the real-world stand-in for Woe’s Hollow featured in 2x04 of the series and the alleged “tallest waterfall on the planet,” according to Mr. Milchick and Eagan family lore.

Before it became a filming location or a state park, this region was home to the Lenape Nation until the 18th century. The name Minnewaska comes from two Native American languages and translates to “good water”: a fitting, if likely coincidental, echo of Lumon’s mysterious interest in this natural resource. Today, the preserve spans nearly 24,000 acres, making it the third-largest state park in New York and one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Catskills.

During our ORTBO (“Outdoor Retreat and Team-Building Occurrence”), we explore how Awosting Falls became one of Severance’s most ominous natural locations, what it symbolizes within the show’s mythology, and why it’s become a must-visit stop for fans looking to step inside the world of Lumon.

Stay tuned for our next episode where we explore downtown Beacon, New York, which serves as downtown Kier in the show and the key meeting place for the Whole Mind Collective, the main activist group protesting the Severance procedure.
