Octover (almost) // the summer I turned girly, with the following notes:

1) only way to leave garrison is with a plan to be back
2) a family with 6 generations of Memphians - with a patriarch married to the girl whose NYC dad started hill and range publishing to publish Memphis musicians in the 50s and 60s - flew all the way to Las Vegas for a wedding only to find out it was going to be Elvis themed and were nothing but tickled (and right at home)
3) dress code: 70s formal ✔️
4) a few days after my 3rd bday my aunt gave me the best bday present ever which was a baby boy cousin who has been my bff since and in Vegas I got the best half bday (10/22) present from my bff when he married an awesome girl and in turn gave me the baby girl cousin I’ve also always wanted
4) leaf peepin back in beacon is the most beautiful way to spend autumn
5) 2025 road trip rule: only Katie Gavin sings Katie Gavin (learned the hard way)
6) when your boyfriend’s beloved old bff invites you to a Thursday Eve wedding in Long Island, cause she’s marrying the Norwegian Viking princess she met online in the pandemic (who you weren’t sure was real for a while), and shell be wearing a custom bindle and keep peacock lined velvet suit, you show up on time and in a dress.
7) treasure = tickets for the first solo Carnegie hall show of your longtime music hero, esp when it ft some new music made at Royal in Memphis — aka blessed by Mitchell magic and Memphis aquifer water, the only kind of music that really makes sense to me
8) when you’re a Taurus and your boyfriend’s a cancer, and you go to two weddings of a Taurus and a cancer in one week, = a good omen by @beckbicks

🎉happy 8th anniversary, Beacon NY🎉

8 years ago this weekend in this exact seat, on my first afternoon in town, I was lonely and aimless and decided I would, for a while, try to instagram all the food i ate in town as a way to contribute to my new community and connect with people (my first photo I shared was a plate of raw radishes and I’m not sure who I thought was gonna want to be friends with me from that). Pretty sure I was a little misguided in terms of how to really impact the community—but despite its limits my lil instagram undertaking (@eatingbeacon ) did lead to lots of connections and friendships for me and also gave me a platform for helping people have better days and more enjoyable lives, which is all I really wanna do at the end of the day.
🍒
Thanks to all my friends in life and at @eatingbeacon and on instagram + who have kept making Beacon feel like home to me. When I lost my home(s) to mold and found most (all) of the Beacon landlords to be extremely difficult and unkind to deal with , neighbors and friends and generous strangers in town and online offered everything from hands for manual labor to jokes for moral support and beyond — and it’s not the homes or spaces but the beaconites who remind me why I was right to set down roots here in the first place.
🏞️
I don’t know that I’ll be here forever, but for now, I’m so happy to be eating in Beacon. With the world burning we didn’t know how to appropriately celebrate the anniversary milestone yesterday when I remembered it, so we just decided to do an impromptu celebratory anniversary photoshoot in the chair where eating beacon was born. 8 years later. Same girl, same goals, different hair color.
✨
Here’s to another anniversary shoot in 8 years to mark more passing of time - may all our hairs be blonder (to have more fun) and our radishes be even more photogenic (and maybe just a side dish and not the main thing). 🫜🫜🫜 by @beckbicks

There’s a reason they planned pride to happen on @leebarbourhere ‘s birthday weekend every year - cause she personifies everything good and gay in this world.

My stupid illness has made life terribly hard for everyone around me, but espec Lee— it’s displaced us from now 4 homes, caused us to swap out 3 cars that tested positive for mold, made it impossible for us to go places that aren’t in the immediate vicinity of lyme informed doctors (aka frozen me in place in the Hudson valley and Catskills), resulted in a slew of friends disappearing as I’ve navigated an extended crisis. And still with all of that loss (so much loss), 3 years in, this guy is still by my side, even though I know it would be so much easier and a lot more fun to be doing life a different way.

And she’s not just by my side keeping me company but is always the one figuring out how to make the world safer and more habitable and healthier for me, all so I can get better and live again—which has taken a ton of work and ingenuity on her part and has included so many frustrating things that doctors and landlords could not / would not help us with. (Landlords in late stage capitalism are the worst, forever and ever, amen). She’s neglected other parts of life to pour into me and it is hard to express adequate gratitude for that.

Still with all that the best part of having Lee in this stage of life is that she has found the way to keep the days feeling fun and motivating and enjoyable and worth it (most of the time) even when I (most of the time) tend to drift towards wondering if the price we both pay to keep me well and functional really even makes sense in the long run.

She’s my home regardless of where we are geographically (some random Airbnb usually) and even though it’s her birthday week now, she is most certainly the gift.

Happy pride and happy belated 22, baby leezus…I wouldn’t want to go through this any of this crazy hopeless era of unlimited possibility with anyone else. Next year is yours. ❤️

ps re slide 2 - you know what they say about long, gangly limbs (a long, gangly life!!!)

pps looks are deceiving and she is actually NINE years older than me, I did not rob any cradles by @beckbicks

I turned 37 on Tuesday. This is what it looked like. Got out of bed, dropped Prune at daycare, went to therapy, had a blizzard and a picnic, convinced Lee to spend 2 hours picking up trash with me down at the riverfront in Beacon, and then called it a day and got back in bed. I was tempted to feel bummed because the weather was perfect and there were so many things we’d wanted to do but when I remembered that on my 36th birthday I couldn’t sit up in bed (let alone get out of it) and this year I was basically a real person in the world for half the day, I decided it was wiser to take the W and be grateful instead of spending more hours being mad at myself and ruining my own day.
In the spirit of getting older/growing up (and all that therapy 💸) I made a birthday resolution this year re: radical acceptance, especially about having bartonellosis+ with no clear end date—to at least give up fighting the fight while I have to fight the illness, and to let what is be instead of trying to control every single little uncontrollable thing around me and adding an unnecessary avoidable layer of suffering to the suffering I don’t (yet) know how to avoid. And hopefully to do the same with the mess of a world we’re in - to be aware enough to do my part but not so inundated and glued to my phone that I become demoralized debilitated and useless. (Now I’m posting about this like a weirdo on the internet so please hold me accountable thanks!)
💖
thank you @leebarbourhere for planning the exact kind of celebration this Taurus wanted and holding my hand through a 3rd sick bday, to my friends/cousins/aunts who reached out and made me laugh, to my aunt bestie @sharonbicks for getting a @sugareesbakery red velvet cake all the way from new Albany MS to Beacon to mitigate both my homesickness and the lack of good local cake, and to my parents for the gift of this life many times over.
Looking forward to 38. by @beckbicks

Who tf else did you think I was going to see the Wicked movie with?
🧹
🧹
🧹
🧹
In 2004, i dragged @chloebee23 backstage at a production of #wicked (or 3!) across the US, when i was shy and 16 years old and supposed to be conducting and collecting video interviews with folks in different wicked casts for a compilation project idea i was helping a Canadian publicist make.
🧙🏼‍♀️
And Chloe obvs had no idea who i was interviewing or why i was working with a Canadian stranger or how id somehow gotten myself involved in a time intensive broadway focused side hustle when i was 16 years old living in Memphis TN but regardless she still came with me because she’s a really good friend and not only did she make the travel less scary and more fun (even stranded in snowy Chicago missing an exam)- but she also made the interviews feel much more legit even though I don’t think she said many (or any) words out loud and no one ever stopped to actually ask her who she was and what she was doing in the process. I know she carried a tripod. whatever she did she pulled it all together with her presence and the interviews were truly good.
✨
I’ll legit always be so grateful for the wicked interviews period of my life because it ended up shaping my entire path, my college choice, internships, jobs I applied for, an apprenticeship on broadway, my chosen communities, the art I like to consume, etc. and Ill always be thankful for the show Wicked itself, for its message, for a lead character I truly saw myself in, for the people I got to meet because it existed ….. and because it really just was the first stepping stone on a meandering path into the arts that im still wandering on. And I’ll always be thankful for Chloe bc she was a critical part of how I got into all of the above, because she comes from where I come from which is precious as an adult, and because my creative brain and her creative brain are like perfectly matched collaborators. Since high school - writing together and making things together makes creating feel like fun and not work.
All to say .. hope you find a friend and a piece of art that’ll stick with you through the years. Both really help. by @beckbicks

Today officially marks 14 years of fun(nel cake deliveries) for me and @leebarbourhere . Here’s 14 pics for all 14 years.
I hope you too have the chance to get to know your favorite person over and over and over again.. it’s a gift.
And @leebarbourhere thank you for always showing me how to keep loving life (and other humans) especially when I’ve convinced myself I couldn’t. You make all this 💁🏼‍♀️🌪️ 🎢🎪🌎 worth it. by @beckbicks

october in LA + las vegas : what an embarrassment of riches / what’s an embarrassment of riches by @beckbicks

I keep trying to write a caption about my experience seeing Joni Mitchell at the Hollywood bowl and it keeps coming out so corny and saccharine and overly earnest and it’s embarrassing so I won’t keep trying but will just say that that’s testament to how important joni is / has been in my life.

Joni Mitchell’s music has mattered to me as long as I remember music mattering (and I was born into a family in the music business)- and so seeing her live was both something I never thought would happen and one of the most meaningful and moving things that’s ever happened in my life.

I would have said all that regardless (before this year), because I’ve always loved Joni — but now I mean it even more because this January I oddly got the same (strange/stigmatized/only recently understood to be tickborne and lymph-related) diagnosis as her (and if you ask my mom she will tell you that I manifested it in myself by being so obsessed with Joni for so long) - and since then i have been undergoing the same treatment she had to in order to finally get well… so I know both what an incredible feat it is for her to be back on her feet playing a show for 17,000 people, especially after the severity and duration of her particular bout… and also how much hope I can take from seeing her basically reborn, since that means I’ll likely be all well again and back to my normal self someday soon.

What a privilege to be there on 10.19 and what a blessing I was well enough, honestly thanks to her advocacy and her truly joni Mitchell-ish fearless outspokenness about something that once made (/still makes) her a pariah. I feel very lucky. by @beckbicks

✨🌟💡Let’s NEVER forget this: i am gonna put up a whole post about my pilgrimage to see the most important artist of my lifetime (and yours) play the Hollywood bowl but for now I just wanted to share this moment because it was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and moving things I’ve ever had the privilege to experience … So good to finally see your light shine, @jonimitchell. We’ve been waiting and we’ll never forget it. ✨🌟💡#jonimitchell #hollywoodbowl #jonijam
