POSTS STORIES REELS

True story: I moved to Beacon, NY sort of unintentionally….after a rat fell through the ceiling of my basement studio apartment in a Brooklyn brownstone. I knew at the moment it landed by my bed I was done with the city forever, but I was in the middle of a year-long lease and as a remote worker I no idea where I would relocate or why.

Lucky for me some friends whod already lived in Beacon for a while heard about our ordeal and offered to connect us with their local realtor in Beacon who had rentals—and within only a couple of days, we’d broken one rat lease, signed another, and were calling the East End of Beacon on Alice street home.

That was summer of 2017, and as of the other day, I realized it’s now my ninth anniversary calling this tiny mountain/valley city the place I live. While I had never planned to set down roots here, I am so glad I did bc my life in the Hudson Valley is so much more wonderful than anything I could have imagined.

As so much has changed, Beacon as my home has stayed the same and for that, (and perhaps even to that rat who sent me here who I try to think of as ratatouille, I am grateful.)

So as a love letter to this mid-Hudson Valley city, here are 9 particular reasons I’ve loved calling it home for the past 9 years. 🌄🖼️🦮☕️❤️

A little niche post here…. but in honor of the mid-Hudson valley’s first Chick-fil-A opening in the former Boston Market site on Rte 9 by Walmart (and politics aside):

Real ones know that Chick-fil-A is the place to go for the world’s best diet Dr. Pepper. Their soda to syrup ratio, the mouth feel, the bite from the first swallow… CFA serves a dang good diet Dr. Pepper. If you want a Diet Coke, skip CFA and go to McDonald’s, home of the world’s best fountain diet cokes. But for your DDP, the Chick is your gal.

And IT = the steamed dumplings at Palace Dumplings. But actually. From both Wappingers and Poughkeepsie locations. Literally…all the time. Any flavor. Any meal, any time of day. They especially on my mind yesterday, National Dumpling Day, 9/26/26, a favorite to celebrate. Hope you get to celebrate dumplings at Palace or somewhere like it soon! Happy Dumplings Day to all.

This stunning pastry masterpiece I just got to try at Dia brought to us by @davethebutcherny who runs the cafe at @diaartfoundation in Beacon, NY. This is not on the regular menu but in the baked goods display case:
It’s a savory roll (like a cinnamon roll but savory) that has roast beef and peppers and cheese etc. She’s as delicious as she is gorgeous and you can see just how gorgeous that is!

So sorry to be cheesy 😂but always happy to do a table knife cut of my pizza at Lola Pizza in Kingston even though they deliver it cut just to make sure those slices get on everyone’s plates as fast as possible. This pie is one of my favorites: Three Amigos. 🍕

I finally got over to @akarisushiny (technically Akari II) in FISHkill the other day and had some fantastic sushi takeout. How could it be bad with fish in its name?! Nothing over the top special but really great reasonably priced classic rolls. Dare I say it’s my new favorite sushi takeout spot in the area? (definitely add it to your list if you haven’t tried it yet — on 9 close to Merritt)

🐎Happy belated Lunar New Year! While I dont traditionally celebrate, I’ve loved friends’ celebrations of yrs past & love to get instaglimpses of everyone’s gorgeous feasts. This year what caught my eye foodscrolling: all the dumplings!

So to honor the start of the Yr of the Horse + the dumpling (symbolizing prosperity) & to help you plan dinner, here’s a list of the 5 best places near Beacon to get dumplings. These top spots offer not only the Chinese dish- but cousins too! so you can try a variety from all over.

Let me know if I skipped your fav!

🥟 Palace Dumplings: primarily Chinese dumplings w Wappingers & Poughkeepsie outposts. Both have seating & do a jaw dropping amt of takeout. Menu has steamed or fried: pork, chicken, veg or even egg (a protein fav with vegetarians!) + additions like scallion or cabbage. I have never had one bad bite here (imho 1 gristly bite in a dumpling means I’ll never go back to whoever served it—to date, Palace has never failed me!) Don’t sleep on the horseradish cucumber salad. Ur sinuses will THANK U.

🍜Dumpling King: @dumplingkingpk near Vassar is another of the areas best dumpling spots, making PK our best dumpling neighbor. They make traditional Chinese dumplings with a variety of fillings that come steamed but can be pan fried (they also have ramen. A+ college campus takeout!)

🇳🇵Momo Valley: @momovalley2018 Beacon’s own dumpling hotspot is Momo Valley, on Main St, serving Himalayan Spiced Momos (traditional Nepalese / Tibetan Dumplings). Momo Valleys Momos are either chicken, beef or vegan, & they have a bigger menu of Nepalese favorites.

🫕Toro: Toro in Fishkill has Korean dumplings called Mandoo: beef, vegetable, shrimp, and kimchi pork. You can get them steamed or pan friend, alongside other Korean favorites like bibimbap.

🥔Krupa Brothers Pierogi Company: @krupabrospierogico gets an honorable mention for the Polish cousin to Asian dumpling: the pierogi. Handmade fresh with their gma’s recipe, Krupa Bros makes pierogis with local grown potatoes + fillings like broccoli cheddar and blueberry honey. Buy a dozen frozen, pan heat & serve.

It is SO freaking cold outside. 🥶❄️⛄️Every winter, I realize my southern bones were maybe just NOT built for this Mid Hudson Valley cold (not like you brave native Beaconites’ who seem to thrive). Over my decade here I’ve had to figure out some special Beacon strategies to survive a HV winter.

Here are 10 of the best upstate winter survival tips I’ve got:

1. Wearing the right warm clothes indoors: wool socks and the viral sweatsuit from @comfrt (designed to combat anxiety - they work!) daily! Sets from Comfrt are the warmest fluffiest well fitting fits I’ve ever tried and you can get them 15% off beyond their sale prices by using my code BECK41 at checkout (shop at my link in bio or in stories to make it as easy as possible!)

2. Getting a whole chicken from @barbsbutchery and using it to make homemade matzo ball soup. Jewish penicillin. (Grab your other ingredients at @keyfoodbeacon !)

3. Sitting by a fireplace. I love the one in the lounge/bar at roundhouse. (Even more chances to warm from the inside out 🥃)

4. Buy myself a Patagonia or other jacket that can stand up to the weather at @mountaintopsoutfitters , west end of Main St. With ur fav outdoor brands, you can venture outside and spend time hiking our mtn too!

5. Long lingering brunch and coffee at @redpepper_diner . Some Sri Lankan food is spicy to give you that ZING aka extra pep in your step. All of the food is delish.

6. Fancy coffee… so many spots for this across town - from @traxcoffeeroasters to @thebeaconcoffeeco to @kitchen.coffee.beacon etc. This winter I’m on a @bmcroasters kick cause i can park RIGHT behind the back door to run in and not get cold & love the delicious soy latte.

7. Indoor activities! Appreciate the great indoors. Like… getting dropped off in front of the Beacon Movie Theater @beaconmovies and going straight in. Large popcorn pls! (Cont’d in comments)
