There is this pervasive narrative that masculinity has to be assertive, or tough, or domineering. It’s one that is so foreign to me. My dad has shown me that masculinity can be gentle, and vulnerable, and slow to temper, and self-reflective.

There is another narrative that with age comes cynicism, that thinking narrows, that heels dig further and further in. I watch with wonder and awe as my dad grows even more empathetic, as his hunger for knowledge and other perspective only deepens, as his sense of adventure expands.

He’s been an advocate for the underdog my whole life and is gifted with an inherent ability to connect with those the rest of society may fail to understand. He is unrelentingly charitable in spirit and has always been so without an ounce of fanfare.

I inherited his love of music. His love of food. His love of travel. His love of the outdoors. His dry sense of humor. But it’s the content of his character that I most hope lives within me.

My breakfast chef and companion. A comedian without trying. The one who leaves me the most beautiful notes in hidden places. A MacGyver of the highest degree. The one who cries every time our favourite song comes on. The worst dancer you’ve ever seen. The reason for my blue eyes. One of my best friends. The first thing I ever remember being proud of was my mom. Her ability to make people feel seen, to make them feel heard, to make them feel safe. Her contagious laugh. Her hugs that could heal the world. Everyone wanted to be around her, they still do.

I was so blessed to have a mother who never hid her fallibility or her flaws, where no question was ever off of the table or no topic too taboo, where growing and learning and struggling and feeling were all a celebrated part of life. I was empowered. I was challenged. I was loved unconditionally. I was lucky.

She has shown me that there is no excuse to ever become jaded or to ever become cynical. She has shown me that even in a world that can feel dark and desolate - beauty is everywhere.

She is in all the best parts of me - every time I cry at a sunset, or feel a fire in my belly at injustice or love with reckless abandon. I pray those seeds she planted in me continue to grow until my dying day.

I’ll never forget the first time I heard “Run”. It took my breath away. It’s not hyperbolic to say that song was instrumental in changing me and changing the trajectory of my life.

I’ve waited twenty years to hear it live and on Saturday I finally had the chance to - alongside, and thanks to, some of my favorite people.

Good day to be us. Better day to be a turkey.

Came out empty handed but had the best couple of days chasing gobblers. Thank you to my pal @jasonbradleyhart for showing me the ropes, showing up at 5am with a smile on his face and for making sure I was geared up right - countdown to April 3rd 2027 starts now 🦃

Tried to make this ten times, if you can believe it, this was the best take 🤷🏼‍♀️
