If you haven’t done anything with any of your kids’ childhood stuff — or maybe it’s been sitting to the side for a couple years or a couple decades — I have THE BEST NEWS ever!

There are actually huge advantages to NOT having done anything yet! 🤯 Sure, there are advantages to doing it along the way, but I’m not focused on that right now.

The more we know + the better the tools that we have accessible to us = the more successful we can be with our memory keeping efforts!

If you haven’t done anything to this point… you may actually like the results better by starting NOW — instead of years ago!

WHY?? 👉🏼

NOW you have retrospect. Perspective about your child that you could not have had while they were younger.

NOW you have tools available to help you put things together in a much more streamlined way (like the Project Life app).

Feeling guilty, overwhelmed, and possibly even paralyzed is OUT!

Learning the tips and tricks to approach this kind of a project in a way that is so much manageable is IN!

All of my teaching on this topic happens right here on Instagram. The private community is called @recorditwithbecky.

It’s time.

It’s YOUR time to tell YOUR stories.

You have a hundred good reasons why it hasn’t happened yet.

I have ONE simple approach to help you take action.

The books you see here in this picture? They’re volumes of “Things of My Soul”.

I printed one book per year and these are my first 5 books. I’m doing it again this year. It all happens with the Project Life app, of course. And it’s way more attainable than you might think.

Want to see the actual pages inside these books for inspiration?

This year I have been sharing every single one of my personal pages in the private @recorditwithbecky membership.

This will continue all year long. I share ALL the details. You get inspired with prompts, writing tips, page assignments, and other tips + tricks along the way.

I’m sharing this as an everyday mom and a professional memory keeper. 💛

When Porter came home from Argentina, he had two years worth of treasures that he wanted to keep. Physical reminders of this beautiful country, the people he came to love, and the service he rendered.

(What I’m sharing in this video can be applied to all sorts of physical stuff you have and want to preserve)

This video walks you through what I did to preserve the memory of all these items using the Project Life app.

⭐️ If you don’t already have the Project Life app it’s free to download and comes with lots of free templates, card kits, and fonts

⭐️ PRO TIP for photographing items: Neutral background so the focus stays on the ITEM (instead of the background) and get near a window during the day for natural and indirect light. Turn off ALL inside lights.

⭐️ The albums + page protectors I use are the 12x12 size. Several sizes and colors are available at ShopBeckyHiggins.com

⭐️ The pages that I printed for Porter’s mission albums are 12x12. The photo books at the end of this video are 10x10 size. Through the PL app, you can print pages AND photo books in 8x8, 10x10, and 12x12.

⭐️ Want to learn more about HOW to put a memory book together — whether for a mission or anything else? I cover a range of memory keeping projects + topics in a private IG page 👉🏼 @recorditwithbecky. Couldn’t let today pass without wishing the Project Life App a HAPPY TWELFTH BIRTHDAY! Woohoo! This app has changed my life for the better for over a decade and been the primary means for documenting stories for hundreds of thousands of other app users!

Over the last year we’ve been pouring a lot of time, energy, and resources behind the scenes to make the app better than ever. So much good to come! (Getting soooo close, I promise!)

Whether you’ve been with the PL App all twelve years or are just joining our app family, thank you for being here. YOU inspire us. Sending hugs to every one of you.

Here’s to the next twelve & beyond!

THE VALUE OF AN ORDINARY DAY
“Perhaps the ordinary was never ordinary. We just thought there would be more of it.” SW

Caley’s terminal, incurable Stage 4 breast cancer has changed my relationship with the ordinary.

Before her diagnosis, I documented our lives because I loved remembering them. Caley, her boys, our family, the conversations, celebrations and seemingly insignificant moments in between.

I photographed them with the quiet assumption that there would always be more.

More photographs.
More birthdays.
More ordinary Tuesdays.

Then cancer entered our family and more was no longer something any of us could take for granted.

It has taught me that the value of an ordinary day is rarely visible while we are living it.

It is simply someone you love still being here.
Still answering the phone.
Still laughing at something ridiculous.
Still appearing in the photographs.

Nothing remarkable happening.

And perhaps, that is the remarkable thing.

This is what memory keeping means to me now.

Not making ordinary life look extraordinary.

Recognising that it already was.

Caley’s diagnosis has made me want to hold onto time while simultaneously teaching me that I cannot.

I can only notice it while it is here.

Perhaps that is why documenting our lives matters so deeply to me now.

Not because every day deserves to be made extraordinary.

But because one day, the most ordinary moments may be the ones we would give anything to live again.

So today, I’m noticing the ordinary.

Q: What has life taught you about the value of an ordinary day?

I’m a sucker for all KINDS of photo displays and this little situation at my niece’s wedding has my heart. It was simple + darling + meaningful.

THE VISION: Create a display of childhood photos of the bride + the groom at their wedding celebration.

THE BACKDROP: We borrowed this room divider from a friend who found it on Facebook Marketplace and used it (for a different purpose) at her own wedding recently. It was PERFECT! We secured the bottom of the piece with yard staples to be sure that a gust of wind wouldn’t take it down.

THE PHOTOS: This was definitely the most “involved” part of the process because it meant going down the photo rabbit hole of the past couple decades. I didn’t want the moms (bride’s mom + groom’s mom) to be overwhelmed with the task so instead of requesting a picture from every single year of their childhood I asked for about 20 pictures total from *throughout* their childhood, with the hopes that we’d get a variety of ages. And they did GREAT!

THE PRINTING: Since I was starting with the room divider itself, I chose a print size that would work well with that. 8x10 was too big but 5x7 was too small. I knew the 6x8 size would be PERFECT — and — I also knew that I could print those 6x8 photos with white borders to help give them some definition. How? Where? The Project Life app, baby! Let’s GO!! 🙌🏼 I ordered the prints directly through the app and of course the quality is fantastic. 🤩

THE DISPLAY: I paired the photos (for the most part) so that Kristyn + Luke were roughly around the same age, but I didn’t worry too much about getting it exactly right because in the spirit of simplifying we didn’t label them with years or ages or anything. We attached each photo with a standard clothespin. Easy breezy. So simple. So fast.

DOUBLE DUTY: Beginning with the end in mind, I knew that printing the 6x8 photos through the PL app also meant that these would go in a 6x8 album after the wedding, for Kristyn & Luke to enjoy forever! (6x8 albums + page protectors found at ShopBeckyHiggins.com)

Anyone else feeling a little behind in your documenting? Around graduation month things got really crazy for me and they haven’t stopped! I’m feeling the itch to create and catch up, though, so I’m inviting you to join me in creating some pages! I’d love to get through May done this week! 😬🤞🏻

I’ll report back in a few days with progress.

Writing is one of the best ways for me to process important experiences and meaningful relationships. The editorial pages allow me to use a simple photo (or 2-3) paired with lots of words to remember the things that are important to me and that I hope to pass on to my loved ones.

Sneak Peek: That last page is using editorial template Set 1A No. 1. But check out the text portion…title erased, FFT added that fits and folds to alllllll the copied + pasted text from my notes app! Video peek coming tomorrow.
