It’s been nearly 2 months since I first sat in circle with the nanas overlooking the sacred lake + active volcanos here on lake Atitlan.

It is something I have been dreaming of for many years.

I feel so deeply honoured + humbled to bear witness + learn from these women. To be surrounded by women who are the living, breathing embodiment of this sacred path.

And it is a particular type of learning which come from somewhere older, it moves rather than from a place of extraction- what can I learn, what can action and comes from a place of deep curiosity + stirring.

What can I remember?

In witnessing other women walk with such integrity + embodiment we begin to awake the lineage of this work that was held within our ancestral lineages that was lost long ago.

In learning from women who walk with intact lineage + witnessing women gather together, touch, share + connect there is a remembrance that reaches in + back to an old part that lies within.

And sparks a remembrance for I wonder how my ancestors practiced, how did they connect with their land, how did they speak to the trees, how did they wrap a postpartum body, how did they enter the birthroom?

It awakens an echo of a memory of how it might have once been for your own lineage of midwives that lives in your blood lines.

We witness to help us remember, to try and reach back and see + feel whilst holding privilege, whilst respecting without taking.

Whilst holding the nuance of: how we care for a birthing mother + postpartum mother is universal with our own cultural medicine woven through.

It has never been more important to protect, preserve + support ancient, traditional and indigenous midwifery practice.

We have a responsibility to support keeping this lineage of wisdom alive so it can continue to be shared + passed within the Mayan communities. We can do this by amplifying + supporting this grass roots project.

Your final call my loves.

Vessel begins when the wheel turns towards Samhain.

We travel over 13 moons online + gather for a 6 day immersion.

With medicalised birth named as the “new normal”, there is a calling for a radical wave of reclamation.

A returning of birth back to its roots + origins

A remembrance of lost wisdom.
A yearning to return back into the home.

Back into the power of mothers bodies + hands.

Back into the arms of birth attendants who understand the importance, the sanctity and the reverence required to not only walk in these spaces but to uphold the physical, spiritual + emotional field of this threshold with unwavering trust, respect + honour.

We need birthkeepers who are rooted to our earth, authentically themselves, prioritising self care, rest + nourishment as a radical reclamation of health, vitality + a fuck you to a culture which thrives of disconnection + disempowered from the earth + self.

We need women walking in this space who are emotional aware, spiritually attuned, and equipped with a holistic skillset, a fountain of knowledge of physiological birth so we can truly invite mothers to melt into safety.

It is time for radical change.

You already know if one of these final places is yours.
You don’t need convincing.
You don’t need permission.
All you have to do is lean in, with fears coming along for the ride.

Fear is a part of birth, it’s an integral part of the initiation.

It is righteous.

You know yourself better than anyone, you certainly do not need me to tell you what to do.

You already know.

Every man + woman, elder, child has journeyed through the body of a mother.

Oxytocin is the root of not only physiological birth but community, connection + sisterhood.

The sisterhood we weave when we come together to remember is beyond worlds + such an honour to witness + be a part of.

This work moves so much further, deeper + vaster than I ever imagined.

The doors to vessel close tomorrow and I feel emotional that this will be the final time that this runs live but excited for its iteration.

We move forward with mothers rooted at the centre, as they birth every new ancestor.
as they raise the next generation of humans.
as they labour souls onto earth through the dimension of their human body.
as they pull quantum energy into physical form

Women are god.

Their bodies the portal between the worlds.

To be invited into the birth room,

to get on our knees at the altar of their bodies in awe and bare witness as the world splits + the veil lifts is one of the greatest honours we can hold as women.

Women are not called to this work by mistake but by divine intervention.

Doors close tomorrow.

Just because I believe every woman is capable birthing her baby alone in the woods, doesn’t mean she should.

It Doesn’t mean that it’s the right path for her.

It doesn’t mean that the sacred (god/spirit - whatever your language) doesn’t enter the emergency room.

They will always be biological truth that is undeniable.

Physiological birth is the most optical for the health of mother baby, breastfeeding, healing + long-term connection. That is fact.

And another fact is that a woman is most likely to experience a physiological vagina birth in a home setting surrounded by people she feels safe with.

If you have a medicalisaed pregnancy… You are highly likely to have a medicalised birth - this shouldn’t be shocking, but common sense.

The issue is not with free birth the issue is the pressure that women feel around it. Which is why we need birthkeepers, on the ground in the birthroom.

The wisdom of birth has been shared around the fire since the beginning of time.

Through the art of story telling, by the voices + bodies of women across all terrain + landscapes + generations.

Through witnessing, listening to turning seasons + crafting to dreamscape and a seeing + hearing beyond the veil and into the unseen + intangible.

This wisdom has been shared, collected, cradled, tended to + passed through thousands of ancient hands.

A bone wisdom as old as blood, mountains + rivers that sits quietly beyond all things.

It sits next to the hag stones, the crooked trees and the plant that grows out of a crack in the ground.

It sits hidden under hospital beds + monitors it is woven into the cobwebs of the top corner of the window + the dust gathering under the bed.

We may not have the language, the tangible form to grasp and shape in our palms.

but in a woman’s body there is a knowing that echos beneath the surface.

A voice that appears familiar but distant that calls to her.

It is her choice whether she heeds the call or allows herself to be open to hearing what it has to share.

This voice older that time speaks in tongues unrecognisable to the human mind and speaks to a braid which is attuned to land + animal kin

It tells her:

“Birth
belongs
in
the
hands
of
women”

The words fall like shattered glass + pierce the places of remembrance that sit in our flesh.

and this is how we return back to sit around the fire.

Many times I have tried to sum up the last 11 moons of Vessel and I’ve come to realise it is an impossible thing to do.

I can list all these subjects, all the topics covered, the in depth wisdom and knowledge shared, embodied, witnessed and held in this space … but nothing really does it justice.

These months together in circle, in ceremony, in the presence of these wise women - my teachers has changed my life.

This is sisterhood. This is what it is to be a woman and to be with woman. Tending to yourself, going into the depths of your spirit, ancestry, herstory is what prepares you for sitting at the altar of birthing women and holding that flame steady while women remember who the fuck they are and what we are here for.

@becoakaiah you are my queen. Thank you for birthing this magic and bringing these life lessons and women to my life 🤍

It’s time to answer the call.

This work is sacred and it calls only to those who’re ready to walk with women.

Birthkeeping is rooted feminism in action. It is in essence deconstruction, decolonisation, anti-capitalism, anti-patriarchy, anti-fascism. It centers women in their own care. It centers ways of knowing that have been discredited as superstition despite their effectiveness and actual safety. It centers the land, the waters, the ancestors. It reawakens communities to the old ways of living. It is a work that changes and shapes whoever does it and goes beyond the thing that you do into ways that you are.

I'm so grateful to have had VESSEL in my life these past 10 moons. It is in total a 13 moon ceremonial mentorship with @becoakaiah and many legendary guest speakers bringing back to life the ancient art of birthkeeping.

Honestly, I could write a book about what I've experienced, learned and remembered so far. These are a few reflections that my luteal brain could articulate for a little snippet into what goes on inside my head pretty much 24/7 (interrupted only by fart jokes lol) 😜
