A couple of years ago, I had the honor of crossing paths with @becoakaiah and @connoroakaiah — two phenomenal beings who continue to inspire me. I first followed their journey through pregnancy, moved by the wisdom Bec shared as a holistic birthkeeper. The way she spoke about women reclaiming their power and the sacredness of birth at home deeply moved me. Through her lens, I saw a baby being born for the first time. I was 32 already at the time and I felt angry. Angry that something so natural had been hidden from me. Angry because Instagram censored it as “sensitive” while violence is normalized.

It’s no wonder I never considered birth until now. I was told it would be the most painful experience of my life, that life would be over after children. But now I see it as a rite of passage — a transformative, sacred experience that can even be orgasmic. So yes, life as you know it may end, but something far more beautiful is reborn.

Somehow, the universe aligned our paths, and I was honored to document a powerful ceremony where Bec and Connor buried their baby’s placenta — the organ of life and spirit that kept Nalū safe and thriving. As Bec shared, “When I birthed my son, I also birthed his guardian angel — his sacred placenta. A tender grandmother who kept him company in the womb, provided nourishment, and anchored him to the earth.”

In reo Māori, the word for placenta is whenua, meaning both placenta and land. During pregnancy, Bec felt a deep calling to keep Nalū’s placenta whole and return it to the earth. As they buried it six weeks postpartum, they invited him to fully arrive in his body. His DNA is now part of the land, trees, and mycelium — woven into the fabric of life.

“The cord, the bridge to spirit.
The dark membranes, the earth’s crust.
A whole universe. A galaxy. A home.”

I’ll forever cherish the window these photos created.

WHAT IS A SOUND BATH?

A sound bath is a form of meditation that guides listeners into a deep state of relaxation using the sounds and vibrations from instruments. Common sound bath instruments include:

Crystal or brass singing bowls

Tingsha cymbals

Chimes

Drums

Tuning forks

Shakers

Flutes

Didgeridoo

Mouth Harp

The history of sound healing goes back thousands of years. Greek physicians used musical instruments to heal patients, tapping into the power of vibration to aid in digestion, treat mental disturbance, and promote sleep. The ancient Egyptians described musical incantations to help heal the sick. Native Americans used singing, chanting, and drums as part of the sound healing process. It wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that researchers began to study the healing effects of music, finding that it could lower blood pressure and assist the work of the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps your body calm down and recover from stress.

Today, sound healing takes shape in many forms. Different types of sound healing include music and sound therapy, binaural beats, mantra and chanting, tuning forks, and sound baths with singing bowls. This article discusses the healing benefits of sound baths, which have risen in popularity in recent years and have been popping up in yoga studios and spaces around the world 🙏🏻🌅🕉✨💚
