Nobody warned me about the “I thought we had this figured out” phase of newborn life.

Week 3 can be when you finally feel like you’re getting into a rhythm…

…and suddenly your baby is feeding differently, sleeping differently, fussier, more alert, or needing you 24/7.

Cue the “What happened?! I thought we were doing so well!” 😅

Before you assume something is wrong, swipe through.

These are some common changes parents may notice around week 3. Knowing what’s coming can make a HUGE difference in how confident you feel when things suddenly change.

Because newborn life gets easier when you know what to expect instead of constantly wondering, “Is this normal?”

Save this for week 3 and send it to a new mama who needs it. 🤍

👀 And I’m creating something BIG for those first six weeks.

I’m building a video course covering everything you need to know to confidently care for your newborn during those first six weeks.

“Milk drunk” is the cutest little term… but it’s also helpful to know what fullness can actually look like in your newborn. 👶 🤱

Newborns don’t exactly come with a manual, and if this is your first baby, it can be *really* hard to know what they’re trying to tell you.

Learning your baby’s feeding and fullness cues can help you feel a whole lot more confident in those early days.

Follow @thenewborn.nest for daily newborn education and answers to the most common questions parents have about their newborn.

Expecting or navigating the early days? Comment **BABY** and I’ll send you the link to my *First Week & Newborn Care Guide* so you can feel more prepared and know what to look for in real time. 🤍

Comment READY 🤍 if you’re pregnant or in those early newborn weeks and want to feel more confident feeding, caring for, and understanding your baby, including what’s normal, what’s coming, and what to expect!

Have you heard of the nipple flip? 👀

Also called the “flipple,” it’s a simple technique that can help your baby achieve a deeper, more comfortable latch.

Here’s how to try it:

1. TILT: Place your thumb or finger near the base of your nipple, on the side closest to baby’s nose. Gently press into the breast so your nipple tilts away from baby’s mouth.
2. LATCH: Wait for a wide-open mouth, then bring baby close, chin first, allowing their lower jaw to contact the breast below the nipple.
3. FLIP: As baby latches, release your thumb or finger so the nipple rolls into their mouth, helping them take in more breast tissue.

Sometimes a small adjustment can make such a difference! 🤍

Try it at your next feed and let me know in the comments if it helped! If latching remains painful, reach out to an IBCLC for individualized support.

She was due in October.

The nursery was finished. The tiny clothes were washed. The hospital bag was packed. Everything was ready for her baby. 🤍

But then she brought her baby home.

And suddenly, she had questions she hadn’t even thought to ask.

How do I know my baby is getting enough milk? Why does my baby want to feed again? Is this normal? What do I do when my baby won’t settle?

Because somewhere between preparing the nursery and packing the hospital bag, nobody had really prepared her for those first few weeks.

But imagine coming home understanding your baby’s cues, knowing what’s normal, and feeling confident in what to do next.

Less time second-guessing. More time enjoying your baby. 🤍

That’s why I created the Newborn Ready™ Masterclass.

Comment READY to join me LIVE virtually on October 17 and feel more prepared to feed, understand, and care for your baby from day one.

Save this for your third trimester or share it with an expecting mama! 🤍

One breast or both?

Start with one breast and watch your baby, not the clock. Think: one side is dinner, the other is dessert! One meal might look different than the last.

Look for active swallowing. When it slows, try breast compressions. If your baby is still hungry, offer the second breast.

Some babies need one breast, while others need both. Both can be normal!

If your baby only takes one side, start on the other side at the next feeding.

What matters most is effective milk transfer, adequate diaper output, and expected weight gain.

✨ SAVE this and SEND it to a breastfeeding mama!

We’ll cover breastfeeding, milk supply, latching, newborn behaviour, and more in the Newborn Ready™ Masterclass.

Comment READY to join the Newborn Ready™ Masterclass and feel confident caring for your baby from day one. 🤍

Send this to a new mama who’s doing a great job learning her newborn!

Did you know falling asleep at the breast doesn’t always mean your newborn is full?

Breastfeeding is comforting! Warmth, skin-to-skin, and sucking can all make your baby feel calm and sleepy.

But what matters is whether your baby is actively drinking! Look for deep jaw movements and little pauses as they swallow, rather than quick, fluttery sucks.

If your baby keeps falling asleep, try:

🤍 Breast compressions: Gently compress when sucking slows to encourage milk flow.

🤍 Switch sides: A fresh start on the other breast can encourage active drinking.

🤍 Gentle shoulder rolls: Slowly rotate baby’s arm at the shoulder to help them become more alert.

🤍 Skin-to-skin: Encourages feeding cues and feeding reflexes.

Remember, swallowing, diaper output, and weight gain help tell you whether baby is getting enough. If your baby is consistently too sleepy to feed effectively, seek feeding support.

✨ And this is just ONE of the many practical skills we’ll cover in my Newborn Ready™ Masterclass!

Because understanding your baby changes everything. 🤍

Comment READY if you’re pregnant or already in the newborn days and want to feel more confident understanding your baby. 🤍

Have you heard of the Period of PURPLE Crying?

It’s one of those newborn things so many parents don’t know about until they’re right in the middle of it!

Crying often increases around 2 weeks, peaks around 6–8 weeks and gradually improves by 3–5 months.

💜 P Peak of crying
💜 U Unexpected crying
💜 R Resists soothing
💜 P Pain-like face
💜 L Long-lasting crying
💜 E Evening crying

So what can you DO?

🤍 Offer a feed and check basic needs.
🤍 Try skin-to-skin, babywearing or rocking.
🤍 Dim the lights and reduce stimulation.
🤍 Try white noise, swaying or walking.
🤍 If overwhelmed, place baby safely in their crib and take a break. Never shake a baby.

Sometimes babies cry despite everything you try. But unusual or persistent crying, especially with signs of illness, deserves medical assessment.

And this is just ONE of the many things we cover inside my Newborn Ready™ Masterclass!

From breastfeeding and newborn behaviour to settling strategies and practical care, including the things you didn’t even know you needed to know.

Whether you’re pregnant or your baby is already here, I want you to feel more confident navigating those first six weeks.

Comment READY to join the Newborn Ready™ Masterclass and feel more prepared for your baby’s first six weeks. 🤍

Taught by an IBCLC lactation consultant who’s helped thousands of families navigate those early newborn days.

By day four, there’s so much happening at once.

Your milk is changing, your baby is adjusting, and you’re learning what all those little signs mean.

Some weight loss is expected in the first days. But how much is normal? What about jaundice? And how do you actually know your baby is getting enough milk?

These are the things I want you to understand BEFORE you’re exhausted, emotional, and trying to figure everything out.

Because knowing what to expect, what to look for, and when to get help can make those early days feel so much less overwhelming. 🤍

Comment READY to join the Newborn Ready™ Masterclass and feel confident caring for your baby from day one. 🤍

Around days 3–5, as milk production increases, your breasts can suddenly feel incredibly full, firm and tender.

And sometimes, that fullness makes it harder for your baby to get a deep latch.

One technique I love teaching families is called Reverse Pressure Softening.

It helps temporarily soften the area around the nipple, making it easier for your baby to latch when you’re engorged.

This is just one of the practical skills you’ll learn in my Newborn Ready™ Masterclass.

Because knowing what to DO in these moments can make all the difference. 🤍

I’m Meagan, an IBCLC who’s helped thousands of families navigate those early newborn days.
