Hit follow if you’ve ever patted your baby’s back for what felt like forever, waiting for a burp that never came. 🫶

Here’s the thing: not every baby burps after every feed, and breastfed babies often swallow less air. Try for a few minutes. If nothing comes, switch positions (over the shoulder, sitting up on your lap, or tummy-down across your legs). If baby is calm and comfortable, it’s okay to lay them down. You don’t have to try for longer than 5 minutes if nothing comes out.

You won’t always hear a burp, and that’s okay. Some babies burp easily and some rarely need help. Holding baby upright for a few minutes if no burp comes can be a helpful tip. If they seem calm and comfortable after a short try, you can move on 🤍

Hit follow if your latch “looks fine” but still hurts.

A nipple that comes out flattened or angled like a new lipstick usually means baby isn’t taking in enough breast, especially on the bottom side.

Try the nipple flip:

1. Thumb on top, well back from the areola. Tilt the nipple up toward baby’s nose.
2. Bring baby in chin first, so the lower jaw lands well below the nipple.
3. As baby’s mouth closes, lift your thumb so the nipple flips in deep.

It should feel comfortable, and the nipple should come out round. If it still hurts, see an IBCLC. Pain is a signal worth listening to.

Hit follow because around week 2, your breasts might suddenly feel softer.

It’s usually not your milk leaving. It’s your supply settling in to match your baby.

The better signs are your baby swallowing during feeds, plenty of wet and dirty diapers, and steady weight gain. If those are on track, so are you. If diapers are dropping or baby isn’t back to birth weight by about 2 weeks, get a feeding assessment.

Your baby doesn’t need a house full of gear. You need to know a few signs: swallowing during feeds, wet and dirty diapers that increase each day, and baby getting back to birth weight by about 2 weeks.

That’s what tells you feeding is going well, not how full the nursery is.

It doesn’t automatically mean your milk supply is dropping.

It doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.

And it doesn’t mean you’ve lost all the progress you’ve made.

Sometimes your baby is simply growing, developing, and needing a little more support as they adjust to the world.
