⁣Throughout his career, Haring devoted much of his time to public works, which often carried social messages. He produced more than 50 public artworks between 1982 and 1989, many of which were created for charities, hospitals, children’s daycare centers, and orphanages. ⠀
⠀
Diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, which provides funding and imagery to AIDS organizations and children’s programs.⠀

⁣Edythe Eyde, a.k.a. Lisa Ben, moved to Los Angeles in 1945 and by 1947 was working as a secretary at RKO Pictures where she used her office typewriter as a printing press to anonymously publish her landmark “magazine” for lesbians, “Vice Versa.”⠀
⠀
In the 1950s, when Edythe started writing for the 'The Ladder', she took the pen name “Lisa Ben” (an anagram for “lesbian”). Her first choice for a pen name had been “Ima Spinster,” but that idea was shot down by the magazine’s editors. ⠀

⁣Born in 1907, Gladys Bentley was the oldest of 4 children. Growing up in a poor household and feeling unwanted, she left at age 16 and found work in New York City as a performer. Her incredible voice led to a Broadway agent offering 400$ to record 8 tracks. Later in her career, Gladys began her Drag King/Male Impersonation at the popular gay speakeasy, Harry Hansberry's Clam House, when they were in search of a new male piano player. Answering the call, she started performing in full men's suits, bow ties, and top hats every night. Her act became so popular that when the club changed management, it was renamed Barbara's Exclusive Club after Gladys's own stage name - Barbara "Bobbie" Minton. ⠀

⁣In 1963, Leonard Matlovich enlisted in the Air Force, hoping to serve in the Vietnam War. After three tours in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, Matlovich returned to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, working as a counselor. ⠀
⠀
In March 1975, Matlovich wrote a letter to his commander revealing his homosexuality. As a result, the Administrative Discharge Board recommended a general discharge. His commander upgraded this to an honorable one, and in October, his discharge became official. ⠀
⠀
Leonard Matlovich died of complications from AIDS on June 22, 1988. With full military honors and a 21 gun salute, Matlovich was buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C, where he purchased a plot and a headstone that read " The Gay Vietnam Veteran" with a quote from his speeches "When I was in the military they gave me a medal for killing two men, and a discharge for loving one."⠀

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots on the night of June 27, 1969, in New York City. Patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising to protest the harassment and persecution LGBT a=American were commonly subjected to. The riots marked the beginning of a bigger movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBT Americans.
