My essay “Paper Grenades” is out now in @tahomareview 💥

Over the past few years, some of my essays made it deep into the selection process at Tahoma Literary Review but they never quite fit the “Tetris of an issue,” as nonfiction editor Ann Beman put it.

She kept encouraging me, going out of her way to say: you almost made it. Keep sending work. Because of that, the journal quietly became something of a holy grail publication for me.

Thank you to Ann and the rest of the editorial staff at Tahoma Literary Review – this one means a lot ❤️

Friday spotlight on Becs Tetley. Becs is a creative nonfiction writer based in Wellington, New Zealand, with work in The Spinoff, Roi Fainéant, Reckon Review, and elsewhere; she’s currently working on a memoir about one suitcase, six countries, and nowhere to call home. Check out "Paper Grenades" on our website!✨

Author Note:
Two hours after “Paper Grenades” was accepted for publication, I received notice from the county that my father had died. I hadn’t spoken to him in years, yet I still carried an immense fear of him within me—it was never a matter of if but when he would reappear. I wrote this essay as a way of making sense of our relationship and to release some of that anxiety. Grieving a parent is rarely simple, no matter the circumstances. With my father’s passing, I feel like I can finally let go. And I hope, maybe, he’s at peace too. by @becstetley

Noelle McCarthy is obsessed with Dracula... and now I might be too 🧛

"Stakes is an honest, unflinching examination of a life lived between what’s good for us and what we desire."

This night was the stuff of dreams ✨

Thank you @bayleighs.books and @bookhavennz for organising a thoughtful and cosy evening about 'Feeling at home' 🏡

I read a new essay called 'Living in Boxes', alongside an immense line up of writers and poets including @staceyteague @janis.freegard and @mary.danae.mccallum ❤️

Many of our pieces were linked and in response to one another, a kind of magic you can't plan for 🪄

Thank you to everyone who made it along - I can't tell you how supported I felt looking out and seeing so many people I love in the audience... Especially on a very cold, wild Wellington night ❄️

We asked Stacey Teague, Becs Tetley, Mary McCallum, and Janis Freegard to tell us what “feeling at home” means to them. Make sure you’re at Book Haven next week to hear what they have to say — you won’t want to miss it! The event begins at 6.30PM and runs for approximately an hour but we’ll be keeping the Book Haven doors open late so you can squeeze some book browsing in afterwards 📚🏠 taken in Book Haven by @becstetley
