Friday spotlight on Becs Tetley. Becs is a creative nonfiction writer based in Wellington, New Zealand, with work in The Spinoff, Roi Fainéant, Reckon Review, and elsewhere; she’s currently working on a memoir about one suitcase, six countries, and nowhere to call home. Check out "Paper Grenades" on our website!✨ Author Note: Two hours after “Paper Grenades” was accepted for publication, I received notice from the county that my father had died. I hadn’t spoken to him in years, yet I still carried an immense fear of him within me—it was never a matter of if but when he would reappear. I wrote this essay as a way of making sense of our relationship and to release some of that anxiety. Grieving a parent is rarely simple, no matter the circumstances. With my father’s passing, I feel like I can finally let go. And I hope, maybe, he’s at peace too.

Last night we were very fortunate to have @staceyteague @janis.freegard @becstetley and @mary.danae.mccallum read some of their work on the theme “feeling at home”. We listened to poetry and essays alongside snippets of the writers lives. It was a special and magical evening. We have copies of Tackling the Hens and XYZ of Happiness by Mary McCallum in store, so come and grab a copy! We also highly recommend checking out the essay linked in Stacey Teague’s Instagram bio, scrolling through janisfreegard.com for everything literary in Wellington, and tucking up with a personal essay on becstetley.com. Look at that, we’ve sorted your weekend reading 📚

We asked Stacey Teague, Becs Tetley, Mary McCallum, and Janis Freegard to tell us what “feeling at home” means to them. Make sure you’re at Book Haven next week to hear what they have to say — you won’t want to miss it! The event begins at 6.30PM and runs for approximately an hour but we’ll be keeping the Book Haven doors open late so you can squeeze some book browsing in afterwards 📚🏠

AWF Write Up, part 1: This was my 4th time at the Auckland Writers' Festival, but it was especially memorable because it was the first time I attended as a published author and the first time one of my children joined me for a ticketed event. Here are some of the highlights: 📚 While attending a Kōrero Corner event on Industry Insights, I realised I was sitting behind the one and only Laura Vincent (@hungryandfrozen). We had a quick catch-up and did a signed book swap. As she wrote, we've come a long way from the fluorescent-lit AUT classroom. 📚 Catching up with @becstetley, also an AUT alumn. 📚 Listening to RF Kuang. The confidence and charisma at 29 years old... amazing. An inspiring nugget, "Writer's block tells you where you need to go." 📚 New Zealand Gothic with the Lauras. I haven't read Dead Ends yet, but it's now on my TBR list. They both spoke so well, and I was hooked. This session ended far too quickly! 📚 Art in the Time of War with Maria Reva and Tareq Baconi: It was inspiring to hear about how they continue to write when their people are navigating atrocities. I asked a question, which I will share with you later because it deserves its own post. But I must thank the AWF for including a Palestinian author in their line-up when other festivals have rescinded invites to Palestinian speakers. 📚 Sunday was all about my son and his favourite author, Dav Pilkey. I was moved to tears on more than one occasion on Sunday because the power that books can have on people is truly heartwarming. To see so many fans of all ages dressed up, participating in a parade, lining up for the event and then for a photo opp because they just wanted to get close to the author who had gifted them so much. My son was beside himself with excitement. I enjoyed Dav Pilkey's talk. It was inspirational, and he is such a role model, especially to children with diverse needs. To that end, again, a big thank you to the AWF for including spaces for those who needed a break from the sensory overload that the festival brings. 📚 📚 📚 Did you attend and enjoy any of these events? Stay tuned for part 2.
