“Postcard from Naarm, 2002” — Bridget Keena

Delivered this oil on canvas to the Fossilsmith yesterday.

Thank you @ledy__._____ for providing a safe home for this painting. It makes me so joyful to see my artwork making another person happy. 🦋🌈💗🤗

🌙 Meditation on the Crescent Moon (Parentheses)

I came back from the bush just in time to see this work in the dynamic group exhibition Swatch This Space at Sol Gallery — and to step out of the heat/bushfire conditions.

This drawing was made as a meditation.
A quiet listening.
A visual offering.

People often say there is music in my paintings — and this one carries a gentle, upward, moonlit feeling of peace.

If you’ve been following my El Montez music journey, this work is part of the same world.
Your support of my artistic practice directly supports my music — and helps fund the next El Montez listening-room gathering in February.

The show is filled with incredible artists — including Lyall Kahn, Alicia Huddy, and Mort Murray — and the gallery is familiar for me, having exhibited previously in 2022’s group show “Reminisce”.

If you feel called to this piece, you can enquire directly with Sol Gallery:

Thank you for walking this trail with me.

Sketch for La Petite Mort
Bridget Keena c. 2009–2017
Collage on board

Another work from the archive.

At the centre of the image, an open mouthed woman fights as her neck is compressed by an unseen assailant using the stem of a lamp as a weapon. Above her: A Matter of Death or Life. Below: Don’t Leave Before the Encore. Across the middle of the work, two words sit in uneasy counterpoint: mortality and intimacy.

The title draws on la petite mort — “the little death” — a phrase most commonly associated with orgasm, but here intimacy slips into something far less certain. Pleasure, threat, theatricality and mortality occupy the same psychological space.

There is a clear relationship to the earlier Jane Doe and Unsub works: figures caught within ambiguous narratives of vulnerability, violence and identification. Where those works circle the unnamed victim and unknown perpetrator, Sketch for La Petite Mort brings intimacy itself into the unstable territory between danger and desire.

One year on stage.

One year of rooms, roads, releases, rehearsals, borrowed amps, early trains, red dirt, city lights, songs finding new forms, and new work taking its first breath.

One year of El Montez moving.

This reel is anchored by Me & My Dingo — a song of animal instinct, loyalty, return, and retribution, captured live by @theaimeev in the Kitchen Gallery at Broken Hill Art Exchange.

Over the past year, the trail has carried Bitch Sonnet, New York, and Goin’ Ridin’ into the world, alongside new work taking shape.

Thank you to the support acts, musicians, venues, bookers, facilitators, journalists, photographers, listeners, friends, new fans, and quiet believers who have helped enliven the rooms, share the load, open the doors, and keep the current moving.

Thank you to everyone who came out, listened closely, bought a ticket, took a photo, shared a reel, downloaded a track, sent a message, or stood in the room while the songs came through.

And especial thanks to Broken Hill
Art Exchange. I’m ever so grateful for the opportunity.

The rooms.
The roads.
The releases.
The residency.
The return.

El Montez keeps moving.

Tomorrow night I’ll be performing at the Broken Hill Art Exchange AGM.

I’ve been undertaking a caretaker residency with BHAE over the past month, quietly working on new art and music in Willyama | Broken Hill.

I’ve kept a fairly low profile during this part of the residency due to personal circumstances, but the work has still been moving under the surface — gathering red dirt, & grit as I trawl through my trail notes.

At the AGM I’ll be sharing a new El Montez work written during the residency, along with other tracks from the catalogue.

Unsub
Bridget Keena 2005
Oil & gesso on wood in custom two-tone up-cycled frame

Companion piece to Jane Doe, painted for the exhibition Un-Self(ish) at Brunswick Arts in 2005.

In law-enforcement shorthand, “unsub” refers to the unknown perpetrator: the unidentified subject of an investigation. If Jane Doe evokes the unnamed victim, Unsub turns toward the other side of that equation.

Rendered only in blue against the white ground, the figure is somewhat androgynous but leans masculine. With its dark hollowed eyes, the image sits somewhere between portrait, identikit sketch and psychic trace: less a fixed person than a projected suspect.

Available — as a diptych with Jane Doe or as a standalone work. DM for details. A painting of an androgynous figure with hollowed eyes in blue on white ground. The figure is somewhat menacing. by @beekayart

Goin’ Ridin’ is out now on Bandcamp.

This video gathers fragments from the long El Montez trail through & around Willyama | Broken Hill — visits, performances, rooms, roads, red dirt, silver light, and returns.

From there, the footage keeps moving: with El Montez travelling solo through Coober Pedy, along the Oodnadatta Track, and into the Flinders Ranges.

The audio is an excerpt from an Emu Sessions recording of Goin’ Ridin’, featuring performances from drummer Dave Davey (@dastardly_davey ) and bassist Jude Lovell (@jude.lovell).

Two of the sculptures featured in the video are by Badger Bates, father of Bilyara Bates (@bilyarawiimpatjia), the first drummer to join The Tarantellas (@the.tarantellas) for the Broken Hill launch of the single at Slag Heap Projects (@slagheapprojects) on Saturday 27 June 2026.

A song about embodiment, stepping into your power, & breaking free.

With special thanks to Bush Witch Productions @bushwitchproductions

Jane Doe
Bridget Keena 2005
Oil and gesso on wood in custom frame

Painted for the solo exhibition Un-Self(ish) at Brunswick Arts in 2005.

Made quickly, in a restricted palette of blue, red and white, the title alludes to an anonymous victim. A young femme looks upward as tear tracks mark her left cheek. This suspends the image between portrait, aftermath and evidence: is a crime unfolding now, or are we looking at the face of the dead with its traces still visible?

Her lips are slightly parted and you can see her two front teeth. The painting is in a frame where one half is gold and one half is silver. by @beekayart

Fool’s Counsel
Bridget Keena c. 2007–2008, possibly revisited pre-2017 Oil on canvas board

An (perhaps) unfinished work from the archive.

This painting stages an inner theatre in which internal dialogue is externalised through the familiar figures of a devil and an angel, each occupying a shoulder of the protagonist. The red clown nose and extended smile push the central figure further into the territory of trickster, mask and performance.

Painted in a hyper-colour palette with sections of gloss finish contrasted with thinner matte areas, the work was predominantly painted around 2007–2008, and may have been revisited before 2017.

I’m continuing to document older works and unfinished pieces from the archive.

Available — DM for details

#oilpainting #fineart #conscience #australianartist #fool Painting of a person with a red clown nose and a red smile reminiscent of the joker looks directly at the viewer while an angel sits on one shoulder and a devil sits on the other. The background is an orange red and the person’s skin is blue with patches of yellow. They have purple hair. They are wearing a yellow top. The persons eyes are obscured/loosely under painted giving the impression they are not wholly there. by @beekayart

“Horror at Hairy Canary”
Bridget Keena c. 2007-2010 Collage

For about 20 years (c. 1997-2017) I maintained “morgues”…extensive collections of printed matter from which to draw inspiration & use in my supplementary practice.

The collage “Horror at Hairy Canary” is one of the surviving remnants of that practice. Prior to departing Djaara country in 2017, I first made a substantial donation of material from the morgues to @dastardly_davey to support his graduate exhibition. Then I made a tough call to let go of the remaining library.

It’s a challenge of the artist, how to maintain the archive over the course of decades. Without safe homes for our creations, we get perhaps forced to cull a little more than we would like. But perhaps we are just too attached.

This work was shown in either/or both the Converse & Mirror Mirror exhibitions at Allan’s Walk Artist Run Space.

Available — DM for details. Collage on grey background with sexual imagery including handcuffs, blindfolds, tongues, wine being poured into a mouth, a gun in a mouth which could also be leaning into an ear, erect pillar. Icarus ascension. by @beekayart
