POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

One year on stage.

One year of rooms, roads, releases, rehearsals, borrowed amps, early trains, red dirt, city lights, songs finding new forms, and new work taking its first breath.

One year of El Montez moving.

This reel is anchored by Me & My Dingo — a song of animal instinct, loyalty, return, and retribution, captured live by @theaimeev in the Kitchen Gallery at Broken Hill Art Exchange.

Over the past year, the trail has carried Bitch Sonnet, New York, and Goin’ Ridin’ into the world, alongside new work taking shape.

Thank you to the support acts, musicians, venues, bookers, facilitators, journalists, photographers, listeners, friends, new fans, and quiet believers who have helped enliven the rooms, share the load, open the doors, and keep the current moving.

Thank you to everyone who came out, listened closely, bought a ticket, took a photo, shared a reel, downloaded a track, sent a message, or stood in the room while the songs came through.

And especial thanks to Broken Hill
Art Exchange. I’m ever so grateful for the opportunity.

The rooms.
The roads.
The releases.
The residency.
The return.

El Montez keeps moving.

Goin’ Ridin’ is out now on Bandcamp.

This video gathers fragments from the long El Montez trail through & around Willyama | Broken Hill — visits, performances, rooms, roads, red dirt, silver light, and returns.

From there, the footage keeps moving: with El Montez travelling solo through Coober Pedy, along the Oodnadatta Track, and into the Flinders Ranges.

The audio is an excerpt from an Emu Sessions recording of Goin’ Ridin’, featuring performances from drummer Dave Davey (@dastardly_davey ) and bassist Jude Lovell (@jude.lovell).

Two of the sculptures featured in the video are by Badger Bates, father of Bilyara Bates (@bilyarawiimpatjia), the first drummer to join The Tarantellas (@the.tarantellas) for the Broken Hill launch of the single at Slag Heap Projects (@slagheapprojects) on Saturday 27 June 2026.

A song about embodiment, stepping into your power, & breaking free.

El Montez (Naarm |Melbourne) returns to Willyama | Broken Hill for the launch of Goin’ Ridin’ — a raw vault track dug out of the Emu Sessions.

Originally recorded as a demo with two vocal layers and guitar only, Goin’ Ridin’ is a song about escaping control: horse, car, road, engine, will. A hand on the reins. A foot on the pedal. A horizon opening.

For this launch, El Montez appears with the first iteration of The Tarantellas, joined by drummer Bilyara Bates.

With support from Curtis Nye.

Live at Slag Heap Projects.

Dust, escape, old ghosts, new wheels, and the trail ahead.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Bard’s Apothecary last night for the New York single launch.

A listening room.
A room that holds a whiff of Manhattan.
A crossing point to share songs of place, rupture, and return.

Huge thanks to BB Sabina (Solo) for opening the night with such a bold, immersive set, and to Bard’s Apothecary for once again holding the room with care. This is truly a venue that understands artists. I am so grateful for this home-base in the city.

Thank you also to everyone who has supported New York so far — every like, heart, listen, download, message, and quiet act of attention helps keep the trail moving.

New York is out now on Bandcamp.

On Friday 22 May 2026 “New York” is released.

It seems pertinent to be bringing to light a song that talks about being hidden, of using your imagination to put a brighter shine on the everyday, to help you get through every day.

Some people help you to shine your light. Some people would rather it hide away. Sometimes you lose sight of your brightness and let it sink into the dark. Sometimes you are the agent of that choice; sometimes you allow yourself to remain in places that provide no fuel for your fire for too long.

I am grateful for the times when I had a community around me who provided fuel for the fire. This song is for you, and for me, and for anyone who has ever felt their fire fading.

I could not have achieved this without some very special people. Dave Davey & Jude Lovell performed on this recording. I was quite blessed to have the opportunity to work with them both. I regret that my time in the dark meant that we went our separate ways musically. Boh Dower recorded, mixed, and mastered this track. Thank you for your patience, and your attentive ear. You are a pleasure to work with, and I learnt a lot. Albert Skipper – thank you for being on a panel of judges at a Battle of the Bands comp at the Newmarket Hotel, and awarding El Montez the opportunity to use Rock Pride Music for the recording of the drum tracks. It’s nice to know that some of the ambience of that special place is captured on this track, and the broader EP. I look forward to sharing more updates about the EP in time.

To celebrate the release on Bandcamp of New York, I invite you all to join me at Bard’s Apothecary 7.30pm Friday 22 May: link in bio.

If you can’t make it and would like to help keep the fire burning, I’d love it if you would take the time to listen to the track on Bandcamp & consider downloading: link in bio.

Finally, thank you to every person who has ever been to an El Montez gig, who has provided words of support, or who has gone out of their way to have a conversation with me. Other people matter, thank you for fueling my fire.

El Montez returns to Bard’s Apothecary for the launch of New York, the next single to mark the trail.

Following the release of Bitch Sonnet, New York opens the next window into the El Montez world — darkly humorous, confessional, and charged with bright-edged melancholy.

Bard’s offers the kind of room this celebration asks for: close, attentive, and made for listening — with just enough Manhattan in the air.

Arrive early to sink into the introspective and immersive sounds of BB Sabina (solo), opening the night with stripped-back material from the Naarm-based shoegaze/post-rock band’s forthcoming debut album.

Plus two sets from the El Montez catalogue, including Bitch Sonnet and New York.

Early bird tickets available now.
Comment NEW YORK and I’ll send you the link.

Thank you to everyone who came out to The Drunken Poet to celebrate the launch of Bitch Sonnet.

Mirrors, posters, poets, ghosts.

The painting behind me on stage is the stylised heart that emerges and hovers beneath the lyrics in the Bitch Sonnet film clip — made by my art self @beekayart and brought into the room for the night.

It seemed appropriate to have Howard Arkley’s Nick Cave watching over it all. Arkley inspired me in my youth — that hyper-colour suburban electricity — and Nick Cave, the Wild God troubadour, felt like one of the many supporting presences among the poets on the wall.

Huge thanks to @drunkenpoetmusic for having me, to @mattsiermusic for sharing the night, and to everyone who came, listened, or said hello.

Bitch Sonnet is out now on Bandcamp.
