Gabi Lardies (Pākehā, Argentina) is the Editor of The Big Idea, bringing us critical and enlightening arts sector coverage and the Aotearoa Artswire. Qualified with an MFA, a Graduate Diploma in Sociology, a previous career in graphic design, and a background in magazine feature writing, Gabi is a voice for artists with deep personal experience. I always thought I was too shy, too socially anxious and too weird to be a journalist. Stuck in my head was also the idea that writing wasn’t a viable way to pay bills, and I didn’t understand the pathways to getting published. When The Next Page programme was announced, its existence made me reconsider.

I didn’t get in, but I was able to register for the workshops. I thought, “cool, I’ll still give it a go, it will just take longer.” The dole clicked over into another year. I looked at some design jobs I desperately didn’t want. My case manager didn’t reply to my email.

Two days before xmas Rosabel called me out of the blue. A place had come up, and she wanted to know if I was still keen. I got sweaty. Yes!

I finally know what I want to do when I grow up, and the programme has been a start better than I ever could have imagined. It’s been a privilege to be alongside @lofsgram_ and @tuliathompson. Thank you to @incorrect_pin for putting it all together, Donna Chisholm and @eva.rose.c for incredible mentoring, and the editors, writers and designers at @thespinofftv @northandsouthmag @pantographpunch @metromagnz and @nzgeo for being so welcoming, supportive and cool! I am a bit shook, and somehow humbled, that they published my wobbly first words.

Shoutout to @hannsjamin for feeding me, and @brodie.jean for believing in me and titling many of my pieces. Everyone I've terribly interviewed probably deserve trophies, lol.

It’s bittersweet to have finished The Next Page. I keep reminding myself it is a beginning, not an end. 💘 by @beep_beep_geep
