Recently so many conversations are being had about the cost of culture in New Zealand - the incredible Culture Work series by @cocosolid_ and @whekefortress ; quantifying Creative New Zealand’s funding choices by playwright Sam Brooks @sbrookbrooks , Gabi Lardies @beep_beep_geep at the Big Idea, and researcher Rosabel Tan @incorrect_pin

The timing of these coalesces with a piece Charlotte has been working on for The Current about the vacant spaces in our cities, and what they cost us to keep empty.

These spaces have been pointed to by almost all of our @nightmayorsakl the underrated and iconic culture-makers in Tāmaki, as having huge potential as arts spaces that can bring vibrancy and innovation back to our city centre. But the reasons they aren’t being used this way are complex.

To understand the tangled web of reasons that are keeping these spaces empty, Charlotte wanted to calculate what they cost the average person, and the results are… pretty disappointing!

Follow along with the series at The Current, the link to the first piece is in our bio. The next one talks about the social cost of vacancy, and concludes with the cost of vacancy to our culture.

Thank you everyone for coming along to the launch of ‘Frisk’ by Jo Bragg last night!

We are so thrilled for this book to be in your hands and we hope you soak in Jo’s words and photos.

Ngā mihi nui to Lamplight Books for hosting us and having a gorgeous orange table that aligns perfectly with the ‘Frisk’ aesthetic even if Jo says he hates orange.

You can grab your copy from ‘Frisk’ from your local indie seller or library! If they don’t stock it yet, please request they do—we’ll really appreciate it!

A lot has happened over the past few weeks in a whirlwind of events. What does our community need? Group hugs? Therapy? A political debate? A party?

Coco Solid’s three day online roundtable discussion ‘Culture Work’ got people deep diving into how to solve our lack of funding, looking at examples from around the world where community support arts. Cross overs of businesses, grocery stores as well as art institutions making a committed effort to acknowledge the significance that creativity brings to the world. In a decidedly hard time in Aotearoa this burst of activity shined a ray o’ hope on our vitamin D deficient cheeks.

Following this was the devastating outcomes of Tier 1 & 2 CNZ AOG funding. Of what was asked for in this funding, just over half (51.7%) was offered. Gabi Lardies has written detailed articles on these outcomes - head to The Big Idea to read further.

Meanwhile, CNZ receives a massive restructuring that sees 30% of employees lose their jobs. Goldsmith receives righteous criticism from Caren Rangi that cutting jobs in Creative NZ will not solve underfunding - “Grow the pot, don’t cut it up.”

Finding a way to stay positive in all this can be a hard thing. Keep warm, talk to community and let us know what you need!

We caught up with our awesome panelist Gabi Lardies before she joined us for our Night Mayors x Darklight event last week.

It was such a pleasure to hear from Gabi, from her thoughts on how we can better support artists in this city to what she loves about living in Tāmaki Makaurau as a self-proclaimed reformed hater.

Thank you Gabi! 💙

Our next event is a week away and this time it’s free with no RSVP required. 🆓

I wanted to thank IMNZ for this Taite nomination and to thank everyone who put in their time and talent to help me make this album real and release it!
It’s a struggle mate, first it feels super self-indulgent to ask anyone to play your sad sack songs and then it’s like asking for favours left, right and centre to record them and put on shows and promote and see if people care!
I am so so so grateful to these wonderful people for helping me make “Can’t Even”
I’m really proud of it and couldn’t have done it without you!
Thank you!

Last night we had another incredible evening bringing together our growing community of Night Mayors.

Hearing our panel of artists and creatives speak about creating in Tāmaki Makaurau, surrounded by the Darklight artworks, felt pretty magic.

Thank you for all the kind words and feedback. It means a lot to us that these nights are resonating.

We especially love the moments before and after the panel, seeing people connect, share ideas and continue the kōrero. That’s what it’s all about.

If you missed out this time don’t worry we’ve got another event coming up very soon, something a little different this time, so keep an eye out for the announcement! 👀

Huge thanks to the team who put it all together @placecreative__ @openlatekrd @christy.tennent @novemberstudio.nz @charlotteaoryan @1_of_1_studio

Thanks for having us Darklight team @darklight.experience @angus_muir_design

And thanks to our amazing panelist lisareihana @matt_liggins @beep_beep_geep
