NOT the way I wanted to start my Saturday morning. Full day sewing planned, calendar clear, ready to go 7:07 AM. My Bernina 770 QE Plus seizes. 😩😩. But, never fear, a few seconds later on my good old search engine, a quick call to my 24 hour emergency BERNINA hotline (aka Bernina bestie @percivalleep) and a short time of panic later, I’m back in business, blood pressure lowered, and no need to race to my dealer for emergency maintenance. Immediately broke out the 590 and son’s 475 as back up. The moral of the story? Always check on line first to troubleshoot any error message……and keep calm and sew on! by @beeschip1

Summer Scrap Bash 2026 sew-a-long Week 2 & 3 - Cutting & Labeling (7/2-7/15) Testing, testing, 1-2-3…….This may sound like overkill, but I really hate ripping seams so I sometimes use PicCollage to test out quilt layouts before I get too far down the road. Especially scrappy layouts. In this case I completed one 4-block unit. I picked a free grid to simulate my layout (although not my planned full size) and then adjust the block to fit the grid unit. It’s a quick way to say - it’s safe to continue. My final design will not have sashing like this implies. Page 2 - If you’re visiting Indiana Amish country this summer, plan a visit to The Good Library Gallery at Goshen College. They are hosting an exhibit of Amish quilts, collected and documented by Rebecca Haarer ’75, until Oct. 8, 2026. Quilters that frequent the area are likely familiar with Rebecca Haarer thru her Shipshewanna antique shop. An Art major, she began collecting, documenting and sharing her love of antique Amish quilts from the Shipshewana/LaGrange area in the early 1970’s. These quilts have not been publiclly exhibited since 1995. Amish quilts have continued to be admired by quilters everywhere for many decades, from an exhibition at the Whitney in NYC decades ago, to the 2024 Smithsonian American Art Museum acquired and exhibited 50 Amish quilts. by @beeschip1

Summer Scrap Bash 2026 sew-a-long Week 2 & 3 - Cutting & Labeling (7/2-7/15)Everyone has had their fill of red, white and blue, so moving on…. Block, layout and fabrics have been selected….for the most part. But we might adjust as we go, right? Next is pressing those small scraps, begin cutting and organize per block. Lots of HST that need to be marked for the Christmas theme Hovering Hawks block I’m doing. From our home to yours Happy Birthday America, our 250th!! In 1787, as Benjamin Franklin exited the Constitutional Convention, a citizen asked him what form of government the delegates had created. Franklin replied: “A republic, if you can keep it”. The exchange was recorded in the journal of Maryland delegate James McHenry. Our self-governance relies entirely on the active, informed involvement of we the people to survive. As concerned as I am, I ardently will celebrate and work for 250 more. by @beeschip1

Summer Scrap Bash 2026 sew-a-long Week 1 - Planning (6/25-7/1)The block choices provided are perfect for a sampler quilt, but after playing with them and thinking about my scraps, I settled on the Hovering Hawks block, a mix of 10 HST and 6 squares, for an 8” finished block. I played with different configurations in EQ8 and settled on a 4 block rotation. I narrowed down controlled scraps of reds, greens and low volume neutrals for CHRISTMAS IN JULY theme. Finally, I did a couple test blocks. Hope I stay on schedule with the heat. I was inspired by many t shirts, signs and finally Susan’s (@susanlorettasquirrel) adorable banner. It’s a quick (and celebratory) project. I adapted hers using 2.5” squares from my stash for a finished 14x26 size. Next I’ll make a hanger for it. Happy 250 America…. 💪🏼 by @beeschip1

Quilters love to commemorate events, mostly happy ones like marriages, births, retirement, etc. As we approached 2026 I decided against a 250th commemoration quilt because of the heaviness of these dark times. But the more I fought it, the more I came to realize this IS my country too, and though we are deeply divided, history needs to be marked. So I thought about design inspiration. Although I love quilts marking the makers rage, but that wasn’t quite what I was after. I’ll save them for future protests.From Diane Shiffer: “The world feels very heavy right now. You read the news. You see what’s happening. And sometimes it almost feels wrong to allow yourself some joy…. But… joy is not a betrayal of the world. Joy is… what gives us the strength to care for the people who depend on us, to do our work well, and to keep showing up for one another.” Look her up. So I allowed myself to celebrate, especially the small moments. But definitely celebrate our countries 250th anniversary. Still considered a young experiment in democracy, we are currently assaulted by the destruction of our country as we knew it. This struggle was my inspiration for my CELEBRATE 250 quilt. And a letter capturing my deepest thoughts will be tucked inside the quilt for history.
