You can have a million streams and still not have fans. What Spotify and every label are really looking for is lean forward behavior: people searching your name, following you, saving the song and coming back to play it again.

That’s why a TikTok moment means so much more when it actually sends people over to Spotify. If they show up on purpose, the rule of thumb is that the algorithm starts paying attention too. by @beforethedata

Blue had no songs out when we found her on May 11.

Just a TikTok full of song ideas from the album she was making. She kept posting the same world of songs for months, about 5 TikToks a week. That consistency was the signal.

Two weeks later, her Instagram was growing 3.5x its normal pace.

Her first single “oh, lover” came out July 31. It now has 2.7M streams and 353K monthly listeners on Spotify. In one week in October she added 89K listeners.

158 days after we found her, Blue signed to 7CULT.

@solana_tii had 2,449 TikTok followers when we spotted her on June 15.

Her song “Okunkun” wasn’t even out yet. Her bio said she’d lost her old account and was starting all over again.

Then the song dropped and the alerts started firing. 2,467 new TikTok videos a day, three days running.

She kept posting through all of it. Almost 5 TikToks a week in September and October.

123 days after we spotted her, Solana signed to Since ‘93 / Sony UK.

TikTok: 2.4K to 33.5K.
“Okunkun”: 1.08M Spotify streams.

Finding artists is the easy part now, so where should your time go?

We added 19+ new artists to Before The Data this week, our biggest week yet, because Reels and TikTok generally keep serving up good artists every time you swipe.

The catch is that a post only tells you about the post, not where the artist is going, and what really separates them is how fast they’re growing and how often they’re showing up.

@strataofficial_ had no songs out when we found them on May 28.

Just a band from Preston and a TikTok clip of “Mr Procrastinator.” 7.9K followers. A voice with a little bit of that Oasis lane in it.

The audience showed up fast. They gained 1,000 TikTok followers the day after we found them. “Mr Procrastinator” came out June 19 and has 786K streams since.

TikTok: 7.9K to 49.5K.

141 days after we found them, STRATA signed to LAB Records.

What top-five artist momentum looks like this week.

These are the five developing artists with the most motion on Before The Data over the past seven days.

We look at seven days of movement across TikTok and Instagram followers, Spotify catalog movement and new third-party videos using the music. Each signal is compared with artists at the same release stage, then combined into a score out of 100.

Also on the move: one artist climbed 122 spots in a week with no music out yet, and another jumped 59.

There are a lot of reasons we add an artist to the dashboard, and sometimes the data has almost nothing to do with it. With this one, it was the voice, the songwriting and the tone. She has a lot of range, the tone is elite, and the songwriting feels unique and special in a way that is hard to explain with numbers. She is still very early, with a small audience and no songs out yet, but when we heard her we knew we wanted to keep watching.

Now we see whether she keeps posting, whether the audience keeps growing and whether that early interest turns into real momentum. That is where the data starts to matter.

We just did the red flags, so here’s the other side. These are the things I look for in the people I’d want around an artist, and a lot of them only show up once you’ve watched someone handle a few wins and a few losses.

Nobody is going to check every box, and that’s fine. But if you find someone who thinks for themselves, tells you the truth and actually does what they say they’ll do, hold on to them, because those people are harder to find than any deal.

This week’s dashboard adds are moving in completely different ways. One artist’s monthly listeners grew 3.4x in eight days, another has 2.4M TikTok likes from just 13 posts before releasing any music, and elsewhere a ten-song catalog passed 1.1M streams while monthly listeners climbed 30%.

There is no single shape that early artist momentum has to take. We found these artists through the music, the content, and the instinct that something was worth watching, not solely because of their numbers. The data is a snapshot of where they are now.
