Accessibility is possible with the right tools and a can-do attitude. The @starbuckssigningstore offers a role reversal for Deaf and hearing people. The staff are either Deaf or know ASL, there are picture menus for people who don’t know sign to point at and order, an iPad like device for customers to write their orders, there is a tv that says your name when your order is ready and coffee ☕️ is served without a hitch. I really love my experience every time I come here. I wish there was one of these in every city! 🖤🫶🖤

I can’t even begin to describe how grateful I am for @behealthybabes for interpreting my birth.

I’m pretty picky when it comes to interpreters, so I asked around in the deaf community for recommendations and her name came up every single time. I didn’t know her, so I stalked her on Facebook and watched her videos to make sure I liked her signing style 🤭

I wanted an interpreter who was a woman, a mom who was familiar with birth, and someone with very clear signing and she checked all those boxes.

I put her as my #1 preferred interpreter on my request list and was thrilled when she walked in the door!

Birth is very vulnerable and Jamie helped me feel so empowered, comfortable, and relaxed. She advocated so much for me regarding accessibility as well as my birth wishes.

If you are in Utah and need a birth interpreter I would definitely recommend @behealthybabes

🙏This is your sign to forgive them.

You can’t control the pain you’ll experience in this life, but you can control your compassion. ✨

We’ve been talking about Interpreters not being available for White House briefings for a long time now under the current presidential administration. On October 13 (which is a Tuesday) at 1:30 PM there will be a hearing with oral (active conversation) arguments between the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) vs The Trump Administration.

How It Works 👩‍⚖️ ⏱️
• Timing: Each side gets a set amount of time, usually 15 to 30 minutes, to speak/sign.
• Order: The party who filed the appeal (appellant) speaks first, followed by the opposing party (appellee). The appellant often saves a short amount of time for a rebuttal.
• Active Questioning: Judges frequently interrupt to ask hard questions or pose hypothetical scenarios to test the strength of each side's legal theory.

Keep an eye 👀 out!

When they have access to language from birth advocacy happens really early. I’m so proud to have been in a situation to see it and that she felt comfortable enough to tell me what she was thinking.

Interpreters: where do you feel like ethical situations or dilemmas come up most?

Those who use sign language exclusively/Deaf people: same question. Where do you experience (Interpreter) struggling with ethical decision-making or ethical situations come up most frequently?

Over here hooked on @eatroyo breads. Does anybody else cook & eat & think constantly?

TELL ME WHAT TOU THINK 🤔!!

I know it’s really easy, and I’m guilty that myself… To judge another Interpreter based on their decision-making in regard to ethical dilemmas. One thing that I hope shifts over the rest of my career is that we ask other Interpreter’s questions instead of judging what we saw or what they might have said about a situation.

I wonder if we lean into coming from a curious perspective and start asking questions would cause us to better understand why Interpreter’s do what they do without assuming that they made a bad decision or that you know what’s best.

Especially in regards to students, I think it’s really important to mentor them through ethical sticky points with compassion and foremost, listening. It’s so hard to know what to do in the moment when you’re facilitating language, managing the environment, all of intrapersonal + interpersonal things happening along with paralinguistic demands. Then, add on something that requires an appropriate ethical response. 🫠😅

We can learn so much from each other by asking questions instead of telling somebody what they should or shouldn’t do (coming at them from a judgmental tone or perspective).

I hope my students always feel like they can come to me when they go through something they’re unsure about, and that they can expect grace, compassion, gratitude, understanding, and support no matter what their decision might have been.

At the end of the day, we will all end up retiring, and I hope the generations to come are able to absorb all of the knowledge and skills that we’ve developed over our career to support the needs of our communities moving forward. ✨🤍

It’s been a while since I’ve done a poll and I’ve had this come up frequently. I started working a while ago for a company that does not allow simultaneous communication. I’ve actually found a lot of benefits of it. For example, I’ll answer and tell the Deaf person that I need to communicate and ask some questions to the person calling in and then I will introduce myself. Once that’s over, I will then introduce myself in American Sign Language after telling the hearing person that I’m going to introduce myself to them (same approach both ways). I’ve actually found a lot of benefits, one being that I’m not jumbling words or missing information.

Predominantly when we use sign language and English at the same-time American Sign Language is what suffers. For that reason, I’m curious what you think about using simultaneous communication. Are there times when you prefer it times when you don’t, do you not care, do you think it’s oppressive not sum-com? Let me know. ✨🙏
