There’s only one month left for official patio season 🥹 @comotaperia is one of our go-to spots in the area, especially when Poppy is with us.

A Spanish tapas bar and restaurant in Mount Pleasant, this is a great spot for snacks only or a full meal. Pictured is the ¿Como? Martini: gin, vermouth, EVOO and comes with a Gilda.

On this day, the @paellaguys had a pop-up, and we were about to order a plate each (usually you would need to have reserved in advance).

The Anchovy Stuffed Olives and Gildas are our favourites so these are always must orders. These are hands down my favourite olives in the city 🤤

Forgot what this is called and if it’s still offered, but a crispy pork belly served with a tasty sauce. I was worried it was going to be overly fried/oily, but it was really balanced!

I’m cheating — this is actually a photo of the Gildas from our latest visit but we must have eaten ours already. 😁 A skewer of an olive, salted anchovy and a pickled pepper.

The bestest date 🫶🏼 Hoping we can find some more dog-friendly patio spots for the fall/winter seasons. taken in ¿CóMO? Taperia by @behind.the.plate

Leo season has come and gone too quickly 🫪 Here are some of my birthday freebies that I was able to redeem this year (RIP to my cinnamon bun from Cobs).

@creampony offers a free donut of your choice on your actual birthday — don’t forget your ID. Love their selection of donuts and their chicken sandwiches are real good, too.

We LOVE @oakberry.ca, like it has taken over our summer!!! We first tried it after running with @saunter.runclub, then had it again with @01010111.rc, and most recently with @onerunclubvan (our favourite run clubs). Since our first time (not including the times with the rub clubs), we have had it a handful of times. 🫪

To redeem, you need an account and you get $14.20 off, which would cover a 12 oz. bowl. Or pay an extra dollar or two and get the 16 oz. 🙂‍↕️ I think the coupon is good for a week after your birthday.

@hanoidrip.coffee has a membership where you can get 6 drinks for the price of $25/month (I signed up during their special promotion of $1 for the first month hehehe). One of the perks is a free birthday drink a day before until a day after your birthday. Remember to bring your ID for this one, as well.

This is their secret menu drink, which is the best matcha drink they offer. 😋 Otherwise, I usually stick with their Famous Egg Coffee.

@bodyenergyclub has a very generous redemption period where you can grab your free smoothie anytime during your birthday month! We usually get the Epic PB, but I think pictured is their Strawberry Bae. You do need to have an account with them beforehand. by @behind.the.plate

Back with the Q2 update. Scroll along for some of our favourites (hello, multiple captions). 😝

But first, starting with @tatchannoodle. We first tried their soba at their cart when they first launched it. We only had the chance to visit their restaurant location during their closing week after a run. The noodles have a great chew and the meat is tender. 🍜

While the restaurant location is closed, you can still visit them at their noodle cart!

You can probably tell that we like @earnesticecream. In fact, it’ll probably show up in every quarterly update. Pictured is their Strawberry and Salted Chocolate Rye.

Was hoping it would scratch the itch for Salted Chocolate Toffee…🫩

@oidecoffee launched their lab location in Mount Pleasant, serving as their production space for roasting and baking. It offers a standing bar (and a bench outside) so you can try their specialty coffee. They feature one coffee and you can have it as a pourover (black) or as espresso with milk (white)

With most specialty coffees, it’s a bit more expensive — $7 for 5 oz. with oat milk (I believe there was no surcharge) — but I love that you can taste the notes listed. It’s a nice treat and it’s always lovely to see local shops expanding.

@nuivancouver is a small Korean restaurant blending traditional flavours with modern techniques. This was probably my favourite dinner in Q2. I loved everything we got.

Pictured is the Vinegared Mackerel. We also got the Seafood Jeon (probably my favourite in the city), Gomtang with extra meat, Goguma and Ice Cream (vanilla ice cream topped with Korean grain powder and their housemade candied sweet potato), along with a matcha slush and some soju.

Can’t wait to go back. 🤤

Also post-run, we picked up a little treat at @lucy.s_van, Vancouver’s newest dessert shop offering midwest frozen custard.

We got a double scoop of the Coffee Chocolate Crunch and the Chocolate Soft Serve (vegan). The former was too sweet for me (I would prefer a much stronger coffee flavour), but Edrian and I agreed that the soft serve was banging. It tasted like a softened fudge bar. We would definitely come back for the soft serve and I want to try the Mixie, which is suppose taken in Vancouver, British Columbia by @behind.the.plate

Like many others in their late 20s, one of my goals this year was to run a half marathon.

It was fun enough running with friends, so why not! But busy schedules meant we couldn’t coordinate and that led to running alone. 🫩 To motivate myself, I would run to a cafe — my first long run over 10 km (in over 10 years and I think the most I had EVER run in my lifetime) was to Kits Beach Coffee. (Hi Evo, can I have my expired credit back so I can drive home after a run??)

I was planning for it to be one and done, but Edrian has been getting into running over the past couple weeks. So now it’s been a fairly ‘enjoyable’ thing for us to do together (except he’s way faster so I am trailing behind cries). Latte from Peace and Culture, which was absolutely fantastic.

More coffee runs (literallyyyyy) coming. 🙂‍↕️ taken in Vancouver, British Columbia by @behind.the.plate

Slo, a beautifully and thoughtfully designed coffee shop in Fraserhood and Downtown.

I appreciate their philosophy and the commitment to fostering community — from team-member crafted recipes to their recurring Slo Rise events.

Probably my favourite item on the menu is/was their Soy Taho Matcha, made with silken tofu, sago and arnibal, a brown sugar syrup. taken in Slo Coffee by @behind.the.plate

A new fiscal — yippe yippe — here are some of my favourites during Q1.

This first bit of the year has whooped my ass. 🙂 But hopefully moving forward, these will be monthly recaps instead and I will be the one whooping instead he he he … taken in Vancouver, British Columbia by @behind.the.plate

We are sooo back 😎

Last year, we had really cut down how often we go out to eat and naturally (food) photography took a backseat to our other hobbies and interests.

The thing is, I actually spend a decent amount of time for my hobbies while at a cafe - whether it’s knitting/reading, or running and stopping for a coffee (if you couldn’t tell, I just love a good cafe 🙂‍↕️). And photography is such a great way to document moments of my life, so I’m hoping to get this account up and running again - maybe with some other type of content (still somehow food related though).

Anywayssss here are some moments from the last year — there is no order to this madness — including bites and sips from our trips to Japan and Korea. I also went on my FIRST domestic flight ever to Toronto. 💃🏻 by @behind.the.plate

Some new (for me) foods we tried over the past couple of months. Scroll to the end for a treat. 🤫

𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗘 + 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗛𝗠, @aliceandbrohm
Ice cream shop in Squamish offering New Zealand-style real fruit ice cream made to order.

FYI that the ice cream is blended in the same blender so you may get a bit of fruit from the previous order.

─

𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗔 𝗕𝗔𝗥𝗕𝗘𝗖𝗨𝗘, @bastabarbecue, 2-3
A monthly pop-up at The Farmers Apprentice, offering BBQ inspired by different cuisines. For $66/pp, includes taxes and gratuities, you get a variety of meats and sides. Cornbread and cocktails were extra.

We came in July, which highlighted flavours from Indonesia and Bali. They are hosting a similar one this weekend, and will have their super tender beef cheef rendang! 🤤

─

𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛𝗔 𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗥, @shunfanoodlehouse, 4
Matcha pop-up using ceremonial grade matcha located inside Shun Fa Noodle House, their family-run restaurant.

Heads up that it’s closing soon so be sure to check it out before their hiatus.

─

𝗭𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗞, @zarakvancouver, 5
A modern Afghan restaurant serving brunch and dinner.

I don’t usually get chicken during brunch, but their Chicken + Waffles in their seven spice buttermilk was so good. 🤤 We also had the Full Afghan.

─

𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗛𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗛, @mishmishbakery, 6-9
A new Middle Eastern-inspired bakery and cafe by the team behind Superbaba.

We shared their Salmon Board, their Karak Milk Tea, as well as a couple of pastries. Their bagels and spread/dips are so tasty, especially the harissa hot honey labneh. Their Twice Baked Concha was also very addicting. We also had their Osmalieh and Karak Milk Tea.

𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗬 𝗣𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗧 𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗠, @rockypointicecream, 10-12
Another local ice cream shop in Port Moody. Aside from classic and seasonal flavours, they serve ice cream cakes and dog-friendly scoops too. We tried the Ube Honeycomb and Banana Fudge (already partially eaten in the photo), while Poppers had the K9. 🫶🏼 taken in Vancouver, British Columbia by @behind.the.plate

Back at @wicked_cafe to try some of their newest items. 🌵

✱ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐧
A vegetarian option filled with corn, cheese and onion. This sweet and savoury bun is topped with a housemade spicy mayo-based sauce. I love love love a sweet, salty combo.

✱ 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐤𝐞
A vegan cake made with red bean and oat milk, named after jewelry.

✱ 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐮 𝐏𝐨𝐭
Wicked’s tiramisu in a little pot, but this time topped with a handcrafted cactus chocolate making each piece unique. The chocolate is thick so you do have to remove it to eat by hand.

✱ 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐝𝐞
Made with local blueberries, a not-too-sweet and refreshing drink.

Lots of vegetarian and some vegan options here. Can we also give @wicked_juu her flowers for her incredible latte art progression?! She’s also teaching her new team members how to prepare coffee art. 👏🏼 (Media)

𝗖𝗢𝗪𝗗𝗢𝗚, @cowdog.coffee, 🐶 1-2
A coffee popup inside Dear Gus that’s taken Vancouver by storm.

We first visited in early February and had a wonderful matcha and pourover but haven’t been back since because the line ups are so long. 😮‍💨 I love that oat milk has no charge and this was definitely one of the better matcha lattes I’ve had in the city. So after hearing about their new matcha popup, I’m excited and hopefully I will get to try their strawberry matcha. 🍓🫦🍓

𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝗚𝗨𝗦, @deargussnackbar, 🐰 3-6
An intimate European wine bar with the cutest mascot.

We came in early December and tried the entire menu (in a group) and despite my lack of and poor photos, the prawns and mussels dishes were easily my favourites. Oh and Gus makes a pretty good carrot cake. 🤭
