CHAPTER 030 | Dreams and Symbols What if our dreams can feel meaningful without necessarily containing hidden messages? Every night, our minds can create extraordinary experiences. People we’ve known. Places we’ve never visited. Memories, emotions and impossible situations. Carl Jung believed dreams could express aspects of our psychological lives that exist outside conscious awareness. He proposed that dreams might sometimes reveal perspectives we overlook while awake. But what does modern science tell us? Dreaming occurs during both REM and non-REM sleep. Research also shows that waking memories and emotional experiences can influence dream content. However, there’s little evidence that particular dream symbols have universal meanings. Dreaming about someone doesn’t reveal their feelings. A frightening dream doesn’t necessarily predict danger. And a recurring image doesn’t automatically reveal hidden trauma. Sometimes, exploring a dream can inspire meaningful reflection. Other times, searching endlessly for its meaning can become another form of rumination. A dream can matter without becoming a message. We can remain curious about our inner experiences without demanding certainty from them. Notice. Reflect. Question. Return. Reading: C. G. CHAPTER 029 | Active Imagination What if our imagination could help us understand ourselves without needing to explain everything? Carl Jung explored this through a method he called active imagination. Rather than immediately dismissing or interpreting inner images, he experimented with consciously engaging with them. Through writing. Painting. Symbols. Creative expression. These experiences eventually contributed to The Red Book, one of Jung’s most remarkable works. Sometimes, a feeling is difficult to explain in words. But it might take the form of an image, a story, a sound or a metaphor. Creativity can give us another way to explore what we’re experiencing. But there’s an important distinction. Not every image contains a hidden message. Not every thought reveals an unconscious truth. And not everything we imagine needs to be understood. Sometimes, repeatedly searching for meaning can become another form of rumination. The purpose of reflection isn’t to become trapped inside our thoughts. It’s to develop understanding that can accompany us back into everyday life. You can listen to your inner world without believing everything it tells you. Notice. Express. Question. Return. CHAPTER 028 | When Two Parts of You Disagree Sometimes, two opposing feelings can exist within us at the same time. We want closeness. But we also need independence. We want to forgive. But we still feel hurt. We want to move forward. But part of us is afraid. Carl Jung explored this psychological tension through his concept of the transcendent function. He proposed that when conscious and unconscious attitudes come into conflict, a new perspective may emerge. Not necessarily by choosing one side. Not by suppressing the other. But by recognising what each might represent. Sometimes, the answer isn’t a compromise. Sometimes, understanding both sides helps us discover an entirely different way forward. Modern psychology explores a related idea through psychological flexibility: our capacity to experience difficult thoughts and emotions while choosing actions that reflect our values. These are distinct psychological frameworks, but both invite reflection on how we respond to inner conflict. And importantly, understanding opposing perspectives never requires tolerating harm or abandoning our boundaries. You don’t always have to eliminate a contradiction to move forward. Sometimes, growth begins when we stop demanding that only one part of ourselves can be heard. Notice. Hold. Adapt. Choose. Reading: C. G. Jung, The Transcendent Function (Collected Works, Vol. 8); contemporary research on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. #CarlJung #JungianPsychology #PsychologicalFlexibility #SelfAwareness #PsychologyEducation by @behindthereaction.psych
CHAPTER 027 | The Five Love Languages What if love isn’t something we experience through just one language? In 1992, Gary Chapman popularised five ways of expressing and receiving affection. Words of affirmation. Quality time. Physical touch. Acts of service. Receiving gifts. The idea became enormously popular. But what does relationship science actually tell us? A 2024 scientific review found little strong evidence that everyone has one primary love language, that there are exactly five, or that matching languages automatically creates happier relationships. A 2025 study involving 499 people found that fewer than half had an identifiable primary love language. Instead, relationship quality was more strongly associated with satisfaction across a variety of loving behaviours. Encouragement. Emotional support. Appreciation. Accountability. Repair. And perhaps that’s the most interesting lesson. Our needs aren’t necessarily fixed. Sometimes we want reassurance. Sometimes practical support. Sometimes affection, understanding, space or simply someone willing to listen. The five love languages can help us begin a conversation. But they cannot replace communication, mutual understanding or the willingness to grow together. Love is not just one language. It’s something we continue learning about each other. Notice. Ask. Adapt. Care. CHAPTER 026 | The Inferior Function What if the parts of ourselves we understand least still influence how we react? Carl Jung proposed that we develop certain psychological functions more naturally than others. Thinking. Feeling. Sensation. Intuition. In his theory, the least differentiated of these is called the inferior function. Not because it’s bad. Not because we’re incapable. But because it may be less developed or less accessible to conscious awareness. Jung suggested that under emotional pressure, less-developed functions may emerge in exaggerated or uncomfortable ways. Someone who relies heavily on logic might struggle to recognise competing personal values. Someone drawn towards possibilities might overlook the concrete details of a situation. But these are illustrations of Jung’s interpretive framework, not established explanations for every emotional reaction. The aim isn’t to abandon our strengths. It’s to recognise that our preferred way of understanding the world may not contain everything worth considering. What comes least naturally may still belong to you. Notice. Expand. Integrate. CHAPTER 025 | The Four Ways We Experience the World Why can two people experience the same situation and understand it so differently? In Psychological Types (1921), Carl Jung explored four psychological functions: Thinking. Feeling. Sensation. Intuition. Thinking examines ideas, distinctions and logical relationships. Feeling evaluates what carries meaning, importance or value. Sensation attends to information available through our senses. Intuition perceives possibilities and connections beyond what is immediately apparent. An important distinction: Jung’s concept of feeling isn’t simply about experiencing emotions. And intuition doesn’t automatically reveal the truth. These functions form part of Jung’s theory of psychological types, rather than four scientifically established categories of the brain. But they offer an interesting invitation to reflect. What have I actually observed? What evidence supports my interpretation? What matters to me? What other explanations might exist? Sometimes, the first explanation we arrive at becomes the only one we consider. No single perspective contains the whole story. Notice. Compare. Question. Choose. Reading: C. G. CHAPTER 024 | Is It Introversion, or Emotional Avoidance? Some people love being alone. Others love being surrounded by people. But neither tells us how comfortable someone feels with emotional intimacy. Carl Jung explored introversion and extraversion as different psychological orientations. Modern personality research understands these traits as existing along a spectrum. Attachment avoidance, however, concerns something different. How comfortable do we feel depending on someone? Can we express vulnerability? Can we accept emotional closeness? Someone can be introverted and emotionally secure. Someone can be extraverted and uncomfortable with intimacy. And sometimes, solitude is simply restorative. Not every need for space is avoidance. Not every busy social life reflects emotional security. The same behaviour can have different meanings depending on the person and situation. You can love solitude and still welcome closeness. Understanding ourselves means recognising the difference between what we prefer and what we may be protecting ourselves from. Notice. Ask. Respect. Choose. Reading: C. G. CHAPTER 023 | Why Does Saying No Feel So Wrong? Sometimes, keeping the peace becomes more important than expressing how we really feel. We learn to be agreeable. To avoid conflict. To put others first. To hide our own needs. And eventually, saying no can begin to feel selfish. Psychology describes a related pattern as self-silencing: suppressing our thoughts, feelings or needs to preserve connection or avoid rejection. Carl Jung’s concept of the shadow offers another perspective. Someone who identifies as endlessly kind may struggle to acknowledge anger, assertiveness or disagreement. But recognising those feelings doesn’t mean acting cruelly. And setting a boundary doesn’t mean we no longer care. Sometimes our needs remain unspoken until exhaustion, frustration or resentment begins to grow. The goal isn’t to stop caring about others. It’s to recognise that our own feelings deserve consideration too. You can care about someone’s feelings without making yourself responsible for preventing every disappointment. Notice. Name. Express. Choose. Research: Pintea & Gatea (2021); Jungian shadow theory. #CarlJung #ShadowWork #SelfSilencing #HealthyBoundaries #PsychologyEducation by @behindthereaction.psych
CHAPTER 022 | When Approval Becomes Self-Worth Sometimes, the need to be accepted becomes something we carry into adulthood. We learn to be good. To achieve. To please. To avoid disappointing anyone. And somewhere along the way, being accepted can begin to feel like something we must earn. Research into parental conditional regard suggests that when affection and approval feel dependent on meeting expectations, children may develop a stronger tendency to tie their self-worth to performance. Over time, those expectations can become internal rules. I must succeed. I must not disappoint. I must always be useful. I haven’t earned the right to rest. Carl Jung’s concept of the persona offers another way to reflect on the social identities we develop. But ambition isn’t automatically insecurity. And caring what others think isn’t necessarily unhealthy. The same behaviour can come from enjoyment, personal values, fear or several motives at once. Perhaps the question isn’t whether we should stop seeking approval. It’s whether our entire sense of worth has become dependent on receiving it. You are more than what you achieve. Notice. Separate. CHAPTER 021 | When Survival Becomes Identity What if the person you’ve learned to be began as someone you needed to become? Sometimes, childhood teaches us more than how to behave. It teaches us what feels safe. If depending on others feels uncertain, we may learn to rely on ourselves. If emotional needs feel difficult to express, we may learn to hide them. Over time, these adaptations can become part of our identity. The independent one. The hardworking one. The person who always stays busy. The person who never needs help. Carl Jung’s concept of the persona invites us to explore the identities we develop to navigate the world. But independence isn’t automatically avoidance. Work can bring genuine fulfilment. Routine can provide stability. Travelling can bring freedom. And the same activities may sometimes help us distance ourselves from uncomfortable emotions. Several motives can coexist. The question isn’t whether these behaviours are wrong. It’s whether they still give us freedom to choose. Can we rest? Can we ask for support? Can we recognise our needs without feeling we’ve betrayed who we are? You can honour what protected you without living inside it forever. Notice. Understand. Choose. CHAPTER 020 | Why doesn’t understanding yourself automatically change your behaviour? Sometimes, we understand exactly why we react the way we do. We recognise the pattern. We understand the feeling. We even know what we’d like to do differently. And yet, when the same situation happens again, we repeat the same response. Why? Because insight and behavioural change aren’t the same process. Our habits can become associated with familiar situations, emotional experiences and short-term relief. Understanding those patterns is valuable. But changing them may also involve practice, supportive environments and opportunities to try different responses. Sometimes that means communicating a need. Sometimes it means taking a break. Sometimes it means discovering that the response we wanted to change wasn’t actually the problem. And an unsuccessful attempt isn’t proof that we haven’t grown. It’s another opportunity to learn. You can understand a pattern without being trapped by it. Notice. Test. Learn. Choose. CHAPTER 019 | Individuation: Who are you becoming? Who are you beneath the roles you’ve learned to play? The dependable one. The independent one. The kind one. The person who always has everything under control. Carl Jung described individuation as a lifelong process of becoming more psychologically whole. Not by eliminating the parts of ourselves we dislike. Not by becoming perfect. But by developing a more conscious relationship with the different aspects of who we are. We can be kind and experience anger. Independent and still need connection. Confident and sometimes uncertain. These experiences don’t necessarily cancel one another out. And becoming more aware doesn’t mean withdrawing from relationships or abandoning responsibility. It means learning to recognise ourselves beyond a single fixed identity. But insight alone doesn’t automatically change behaviour. Growth may also involve practising different responses, observing what happens and adapting along the way. You do not become yourself by being only one thing. Notice. Include. Choose. Reading: C. G. Jung, Two Essays on Analytical Psychology; Murray Stein, The Concept of Individuation (IAAP). #CarlJung #Individuation #JungianPsychology #SelfAwareness #PsychologyEducation by @behindthereaction.psych
