‘What they see above III’
Oil on wood panel, 2026
15x21cm

This little painting kickstarted my triptych at @southwarkparkgalleries . Starting with trees in mind I found that the abstraction let me really just think about the materiality and how I applied the paint. Thick, short strokes in a fan pattern for the pale plane and smooth, light-pressure diagonals for the blue. It makes me think about looking up at the sky with someone doing the same beside me. Someone else said it reminded them of burning ashes. I like that, with this piece, it’s up to the viewer what they see. by @bellaabacon

I left this painting in France. It was the first piece I did after a year away from my art practice. It frustrated me more than any work I’d done and took two canvases, but I was then all the more fond of it when I finished. by @bellaabacon
