A poem for my granddad who I lost at the beginning of the year from lung cancer, after a long slow battle with it. He passed away in his bed, with my grandma and my mum at his side, which is what he had wanted. He was never a fan of hospitals.

When I was a young girl, me and my granddad never got along too well. I didn’t like how he could be bossy to my grandma and he didn’t like how noisy I could be when I got hyper. In the quiet of the evening times we would be sitting watching TV and he would reach out his hand and say “give me some skin” meaning “let me hold your hand”. Despite our differences, it was a soft moment of him showing me affection. As I grew up, I realised he was just a man stuck in his ways, who suffered a crazy stroke which led him to quite literally become a hermit for the last 20 years of his life. Despite our differences in my childhood, he was an amazing man, an extremely loyal and loving husband, father and grandfather, and he taught me a lot about what I want to achieve from this life. One of the last things I ever said to him, was a promise that I will keep writing and I will achieve my dreams. “I’ll make you proud Granddad”

So after a long rest, I’ve decided to come back and do just that.

Goodnight Jimmy. I’ll always give you some skin. 🕊️
