We blower-door test every house to find where the air sneaks out. I’d love to tell you our client follow-up is just as tight... but we're builders, and our calendar shows it.

So we’re getting help. Our marketing partners at IMW are hiring a part-time Marketing & Sales Coordinator to work with us at BPC. They’ll keep our CRM honest, make sure every client gets the welcome, the thank-you and the check-in a year after move-in, and (God help them) wrangle our schedules. It’s about 10 hours a week, $40 an hour, remote.

Know an organized, early-career marketer who’d like to learn the building world? Send them our way. Link in bio. by @benbogie

Most of what we’ve built lately is contemporary. This house is a different assignment, and one we really enjoy.

A traditional New England exterior used to mean raw wood and oil-based paint. Materials have changed a lot since then, and our go-to for almost any exterior trim is now TruExterior. It’s stable, so we don’t have to plan around expansion and contraction. It also machines well. There are plenty of off-the-shelf profiles that match existing window and door heads, and when we need something specific we mill our own profiles and trim stacks.

Traditional details only read as traditional when the lines are crisp and the paint holds. That’s what this material gives us, and it’s why it’s our gold standard.

Request a TruExterior sample and get a chance to experience the material for yourself. Your sample request also enters you for a chance to win a trip to the 2027 @intlbuildersshow in Las Vegas. Head to the link in bio to request your sample and enter! by @benbogie

Be a model of the world you want. It was truly an honor to host Tedd Benson, a pioneer in the revival of timber framing in modern America, at the Fine Homebuilding Summit.

From being responsible for reviving timber framing in America - with hand saws and chisels in the 70s - to developing “open building” systems that make homes more flexible and repairable, to automating factory production of high performance homes, Tedd Benson has done it all.

We were honored to feature Tedd and his legacy as our luminary interview at the Fine Homebuilding Summit last month. And now you can hear it too on the FHB Podcast. Episode out now, listen everywhere podcasts play, or at the link in bio 🎧 #KeepCraftAlive by @benbogie

You don't always know what you're dealing with until the cladding comes off, even on a large-scale project you think you've fully scoped.

This one wasn't supposed to touch the siding. Plan was to swap windows and doors and retrim the existing cladding. Then we opened up the front and found structural issues nobody could see from outside. Once we were already into the siding, it became a rare chance to fix the air barrier at the sheathing plane before it got covered back up.

Retrofits like this are a patchwork: skip sheathing, board sheathing, old window openings closed in over the years. To pull it all into one continuous air barrier, we used a self-adhered house wrap from @benjaminobdyke, HydroGap SA. It's fully adhered, so it acts like one giant sheet of tape across the wall.

The drainable texture behind it is what matters most. More moisture gets through cladding than most people assume, especially in heavy rain. That gap gives it somewhere to go instead of sitting against the wall, which is what keeps paint from bubbling and keeps moisture from pushing further into the assembly.

Drained and dried is what makes it last. by @benbogie

There's a reason you won't find spray foam in every cavity in this basement.

Below grade, we hold the wall framing two inches off the concrete and fill that gap with closed cell spray foam. That thickness does two jobs at once: it blocks moisture from driving in through the concrete, and it keeps that surface warm enough that condensation never has a reason to form. That's the difference between a basement that smells musty and one that doesn't.

Everywhere else, we're filling with TimberFill and TimberBatt from @timberhp.insulatebetter, wood fiber insulation that gives us the same continuity with a much lighter carbon footprint than foam. TimberBatt is flexible enough to hand-cut around things foam can't get close to, like the cast iron pipe in this wall, so there's no gap left uninsulated.

Foam where the job calls for it. Wood fiber everywhere else. That's what continuous insulation actually looks like. by @benbogie

@stevenbaczekarchitect had a post on this the other day. HERS scores are one of the most impactful tools I’ve had to understand how we’re doing with our buildings. The simple act of letting someone else check your work teaches volumes!

PUT THE CAN DOWN AND BACK AWAY FROM THE WINDOW.

IT’S A WINDOW, NOT A TWINKIE.

A gap isn’t automatically an invitation to stuff something into it.

Around our windows, we make a continuous interior air seal and preserve a drainage path to the flashed sill and outdoors. Water gets an exit. It doesn’t need accommodations.

Insulated buck or no insulated buck, our approach stays consistent: compatible, flexible sealant, minimal stone wool backing where the sealant requirements allow, and a clear drainage path outside that seal. We address the thermal connection through the insulation detail.

@benbogie is testing the temperature difference between foamed and unfilled portions of window perimeters. Results pending—we’re interested in the measurements, not declaring victory before they exist.

Seal the air. Detail the insulation. Let water out.
