🐠🌊 ¡New paper alert! 🚨

The blind goby (*Typhlogobius californiensis*) is a remarkable fish found only in California. These fishes form long-term pair bonds, an unusual and fascinating behavior that helps us understand evolution, adaptation, and biodiversity. Our research explores their biology using genomic tools, specimen collections, and field-based studies. Work like this expands scientific knowledge, trains students, and documents biodiversity for future generations. Interested in supporting our work?

Had a few chances to snorkel around Sydney last week! So amazing getting in the water there. I revisited Shelly Beach in Manly, which was great and explored the narrow cut Clovelly Beach. Over 370 species have been recorded in the Cabbage Tree Bay Reserve where Shelly is so it’s always a surprise who you will see. Enjoy some shots from my horribly aged GoPro taken in Shelly Beach by @benfrableoffishial

Behind every specimen there’s a story, and sometimes a rescue mission.
When the fish collection in Puerto Rico was at risk, the National Science Foundation stepped in to help preserve decades of scientific work. The specimens were transported to the Scripps Marine Vertebrate Collection, where our team has been carefully sorting, cataloging, and giving them a stable home.

These fishes, many collected from Caribbean reefs and coastal ecosystems, are now protected, digitized, and available to scientists, educators, and the public.
We made a short video to share how this rescue effort is helping keep biodiversity alive for future research and discovery:

Grateful for the people and the support that make this work possible.

Feel free to share and help us spread the word! ❤️ by @benfrableoffishial

Next Revillagigedos post! Beyond the common bony fishes, the most present animals out there are sharks. We saw tiger, scalloped hammerhead, white tip reef, silver tip, Galapagos and Silky sharks. I’ve never seen so many- a window in what the oceans may have been like.

1) juv tiger (only 6 ft)
2) many silky/ Galapagos sharks hung around the boat at night hoping for prey attracted to the lights
3) prey appeared (flyingfish)
4) Galapagos shark (?) in the blue
5) silvertips and jacks at a cleaning station on San Benedicto
6) Big silvertips at Roca Partida
7) whitetip reef shark from above at Roca Partida. Note the remora in its… gills???
8) whitetip reefs rest in piles during the day. Perhaps for protection in numbers?
9) by the end of a dive, we’d attract a few whitetips…
10) guess this guy was still dozing Juvenile tiger shark (only 6ft) taken in Archipiélago de Revillagigedo by @benfrableoffishial

I will post more in the coming days. The past two weeks I participated in an Ichthyological research expedition to the Revillagigedo Islands about 300 mi south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. And the islands were truly magical. One of the best experiences from the trip was diving with MASSIVE Yellowfin Tuna, Thunnus albacares, at Roca Partida! These fish were at least 6 ft long and 2-3 ft wide! by @benfrableoffishial
