🐟Collection Manager of Marine Vertebrates at Scripps institution of Oceanography 🐠

🐠🌊 ¡New paper alert! 🚨

En este nuevo trabajo pudimos contribuir a la curación y actualización del inventario de la diversidad de peces asociados a los arrecifes del Parque Nacional Archipiélago de Revillagigedo. Como resultados clave, se permitió confirmar la ocurrencia de 234 especies, mientras que otras 121 fueron excluidas por no considerarse aceptables sus registros. Además, se reconocieron 23 especies endémicas o posiblemente endémicas, reflejando una vez más la enorme biodiversidad y el gran valor de conservación de este extraordinario archipiélago. Ha sido un gran esfuerzo de muchas personas para obtener estos resultados, por lo que en ese sentido es especialmente destacable la importancia de la colaboración interinstitucional!

¡Muchas felicidades al Dr. Ross Robertson, a parte del equipo del Laboratorio de Ecología Acuática J. MBCers are in the lab this week learning all things biodiversity 🙌

Following the weekend research cruises on the R/V Sproul, MBC summer is learning about Taxonomy and the Tree of Life, the Microbial Woeld and CalCOFI before diving into their first lab on ichthyology today 🧬🐟🔬

Stay tuned as students continue to learn from researchers ar SIO and NOAA about the amazing diversity of life in @scripps_ocean Collections, @calcofi , @birchaquarium and more 👏👏

🇧🇷Nesses últimos 2 meses eu tive a honra de poder participar da embarcação do R/VFalkorToo do projeto “Animals as Living Bioreactors: The role of animal gut microbiomes in shaping oceanic carbon cycling and export” da Schmidt Ocean Institute e Schmidt Sciences.

Aprendendo desde o processo de formação da neve marinha, para como ciclos de migração vertical diário de animais mesopelágicos influencia o ciclo do carbono marinho, os resultados dessa expedição em minha jornada como cientista e defensor do oceano não possuem valor.

Gostaria de agradecer à @risefortheworld e ao time da @schmidtocean e do OBVI da @schmidtsciences por terem me incluído no projeto de tamanha importância. Por fim, um agradecimento especial ao Prof. @delanosch e à @brunanascimentt por terem sido mentores durante a expedição, me ensinando e me fazendo rir durante um mês, e aos PIs, museólogos e pós-docs na viagem, dos quais tenho só a agradecer.

🇺🇲For the past 2 months I had the honor to participate in the R/VFalkorToo expedition of the “Animals as Living Bioreactors: The role of animal gut microbiomes in shaping oceanic carbon cycling and export” from Schmidt Ocean Institute and Schmidt Sciences.

Learning since the process of formation and diversity of marine snow, to how dial vertical migration cycles influence in the marine carbon cycle, the outcome of this expedition in my as a scientist and defensor of the ocean is invaluable.

I would like to thank @risefortheworld and the team from @schmidtocean and OBVI from @schmidtsciences for having included me in such an important project. Lastly, I’d like to give a huge thanks to Prof. Delano and to Bruna for being such kind mentors during the expedition, and would also like to thank the PIs, museologists and the Grad students, to whom I have only praise to give.

It takes some trust for artists to work in spaces that aren’t capital A art spaces (like the capital A aquarium where I work). It requires discussion, and reflection, and rebalancing. But that’s kind of what @meditation_ocean Meditation Ocean Constellation, @hope_q_ginsburg Hope Ginsburg’s long time collaborative convening of artist and scientists and other folks, does. Hope scans with owl eyes to see who is included in this work of ecology/art/spirituality and also to see who else should be. With Meditation Ocean: Aquarius Reef Base, Hope folded our team into a project lived in “widening circles that reach out across the world.” As the show closes this weekend, I’m grateful for the meditative aquatic space given to babies and caregivers on Wednesday mornings, and classrooms of high schoolers camped out on beanbags, and visitors who would sit in meditation with headphones, and Scripps Oceanography students, faculty and staff in an extended exhibition experience led in meditation by Hope on Scripps Pier, and even to the former aquanauts, who shared stories with the public during public programming.

And of course, I’m grateful to Hope: for being so kind, and for literally giving me the shirt off her back. Seriously. When I said I wished I’d gotten an MIT CAVS t-shirt from my days hanging out there, she gave me her shirt. Speaking of tendrils of connection, this collaboration might not have happened if @me1odiousone Melody Jue (with whom we worked on the PST Art exhibition Embodied Pacific) hadn’t written a piece for the Meditation Ocean exhibition Wexner Center for the Arts (@wexarts ), bringing it to the attention of Lisa Cartwright, who shared it with me. Or if Hope and Meditation Ocean Constellation hadn’t posted a full Climate Impact Report — which I knew about because of working with Artists/Galleries Commit through @lauraluptn and @debrascaccostudio . So in a small way, this beautiful project is a partial outgrowth of the network of @pstinla , the full ripples of which have yet to be seen.

The blind goby (*Typhlogobius californiensis*) is a remarkable fish found only in California. These fishes form long-term pair bonds, an unusual and fascinating behavior that helps us understand evolution, adaptation, and biodiversity. Our research explores their biology using genomic tools, specimen collections, and field-based studies. Work like this expands scientific knowledge, trains students, and documents biodiversity for future generations. Interested in supporting our work?

Behind every specimen there’s a story, and sometimes a rescue mission.

When the fish collection in Puerto Rico was at risk, the National Science Foundation stepped in to help preserve decades of scientific work. The specimens were transported to the Scripps Marine Vertebrate Collection, where our team has been carefully sorting, cataloging, and giving them a stable home.

These fishes, many collected from Caribbean reefs and coastal ecosystems, are now protected, digitized, and available to scientists, educators, and the public.
We made a short video to share how this rescue effort is helping keep biodiversity alive for future research and discovery:

Another amazing research adventure out on the RV Robert Gordon Sproul ☑️🛥️💦

This weekend the MBC students got their feet (literally) wet getting to experience life aboard a marine research vessel, including learning how to deploy a plankton tow and otter trawl, sort, identify, and collect samples from a variety of depths, and operate inside the onboard laboratory 🔬

Besides getting to know the awesome crew aboard the Sproul, Chief Scientist for Saturday @museumscientist and Sunday @benfrableoffishial, as well as students from labs of @drverm @arciladahiana @dicknorrisforamking, they also got to meet all sorts of vibrant marine life coming depths as deep as 775m 🕳️

… now that we’re good and salty, who’s ready for Governance Week!?
