“The film has a nostalgic tone and I felt that Super8 could add to that. But I wanted to treat it seriously and that probably excited me the most – approach the shooting of the film on this ‘amateur’ format with the same rigour that one would if shooting on 16mm, 35mm or the latest high-end digital cameras.”

Ben Hecking - writer, director and cinematographer of ‘Haar’ - on why he chose Super8 for his new feature, which recently premiered at the BFI London Film Festival.

Find out more about Ben’s fascinating shooting process, involving both film and digital capture, via the link in bio.

I've had to keep this one quiet for some time now but it gives me immense pleasure to announce that my latest feature, HAAR, will be having it's World Premiere at the 67th BFI London Film Festival.

I've been going to the festival every year since I moved to London in 2007 and always dreamt that, one day, a film I was involved with would get to screen at the #LFF. Thank you so so much to the team @britishfilminstitute for making that dream come true.

We shot the film using 50 year old cameras on a format that was never designed for 'professional' use and to say that the ride of making this film has been a bumpy one would be an understatement. Thank you so so much to all of the crew who have worked tirelessly to make it all happen. Follow @haarfilm for updates over the coming weeks and an insight into how we put it all together.

Finally I want to extend a very special thanks to @amandazz100 for taking a chance on us and for allowing all of this to happen; to my parents for their unwavering support and to @katekenners for being the best collaborator and friend anyone could ask for.

Late to this news but what a loss. Urge everyone to do a deep dive into Gordon Lightfoot’s beautiful music. This song in particular is soundtracking a new script. #rip #gordonlightfoot by @benhecking

Lovely review from @latimes for @thecreepingfilm with a nice little mention of its style which, in their words, is delivered;

“…with panache: the dark shadows, the rich colors and the beams of light bringing an eerie glow to the misty air.”

You can find the Creeping on Premium VOD in the US and Canada on iTunes, Amazon, GooglePlay, VUDU, XBox and Vimeo. Enjoy!

It was made with a lot of love by a wonderful bunch of talented people so if you fancy a good old fashioned ghost story for your Saturday night viewing why don’t you give it a go?

With much love and many thanks to the team @darkskyfilms and to our wonderful exec @amanda.atkins.718 for making it all possible and for our fearless leader (co-writer, co-producer, director, editor, VFX maestro) @jamhoop and @lensound (co-writer, co-producer and sound designer extraordinaire).

Brian Tufano 1939-2023.

When I studied cinematography at the National Film and Television School, I was fortunate enough to have the guiding hand of two giants in the field - Brian Tufano and Stuart Harris.

I found out this morning that Brian has, sadly, passed away. He was a huge inspiration to all of the students under his care and I will be eternally grateful to him for the support he gave me at a difficult time in my life.

He could be fierce in his opinions and was brutally honest in his critique of your work but I remember him most for his warmth, humour and encouragement. When he laughed his whole face would light up.

The work he produced speaks for itself - he was behind the lens for some of the classics of British cinema - Quadrophenia, Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, East is East, Billy Elliot as well as shooting additional photography on Blade Runner.

He was inventive and creative - I remember him telling us stories of how he’d keyed one of the characters on Kidulthood using a lightbulb in a Pringles can - and I remember in one class, watching him work with one of his Gaffers in lighting a plastic wheelie bin. I swear you’ve never seen a plastic wheelie bin look as good.

Since graduating Brian was always very interested in what his past students were up to and, as I started to direct things, he continued to be supportive. I will cherish my memories of him.

My thoughts go out to his friends and family. Rest in Peace Brian.

All these images were taken from a BSC article about Brian a few years ago. The second, BTS snap from Trainspotting is particularly wonderful. by @benhecking

Holm, Richardson and Warner at Stratford in the 1960’s. I love this photo. Warner, in particular, oozes ‘cool’. Sadly all three of these stars have now gone.

After a lifetime of delivering some phenomenal performances (Time Bandits, Cross of Iron, The Omen, Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment) I was really saddened to read that David Warner has died at the age of 80 after battling cancer.

Following on from the news of Bob Rafelson’s passing I’m suddenly even more aware that a lot of the filmmakers and actors who inspired me to want to work in this industry are fast disappearing. Fortunately there are some brilliant people working now, and coming up, who I know we will be talking about in the same way in 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 years time.

We all stand on the shoulders of giants. by @benhecking

Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson finding something highly amusing.

I’ve always loved Five Easy Pieces (in my opinion one of Nicholson’s best performances) but The King of Marvin Gardens and Rafelson’s remake of The Postman Always Rings Twice are well worth watching.

Thanks for the movies Mr Rafelson. by @benhecking
