“Necessity is the mother of invention” is a proverb that pretty much sums up low budget filmmaking. My feature @thecreepingfilm had scenes where the three main characters are driving, unfortunately we didn’t have enough budget or time for a low loader/process trailer, camera mounts, etc.

So... here we have the Poor Man’s Process in action. The car was parked on the main location driveway but with the combination of camera movement, some dynamic lighting from DoP @benhecking, and @riannsteele doing her best driving acting, it looks pretty great. The final element that really sells it is the sound design by @lensound. This technique is especially useful because you can completely control the shooting environment, and you don’t need the engine running so you can easily capture clean audio. Plus it’s great fun for the cast and crew and always exciting to solve a problem creatively.

Watch the ridiculous BTS video from Makeup Designer @katiekingmakeup where you can see me watching the monitor whilst rocking the car, then check out the final scene from the film. Much more fun than green screen. Movie magic. 🎥 🪄

Behind the scenes on my feature @thecreepingfilm. This film was made with passion by a small group of talented and creative people. We tried to be as ambitious as possible with the budget and time at our disposal and I think we (mostly) pulled it off… I hope. I’ll let you be the judge. If you like spooky, retro-inspired films, give it a go.

“The film has a nostalgic tone and I felt that Super8 could add to that. But I wanted to treat it seriously and that probably excited me the most – approach the shooting of the film on this ‘amateur’ format with the same rigour that one would if shooting on 16mm, 35mm or the latest high-end digital cameras.”

Ben Hecking - writer, director and cinematographer of ‘Haar’ - on why he chose Super8 for his new feature, which recently premiered at the BFI London Film Festival.

Last weekend we celebrated the world premiere of @haarfilm directed by @benhecking at @britishfilminstitute #LFF

Sharing some photos of our London adventures🇬🇧 #moretocomesoon😍
Lots of love and gratitude to the wonderful cast and crew.

" ‘HAAR’ is the word for a cold Scottish sea fog, although Ben Hecking’s appealing second feature is shot in Budapest, where a TV production manager named Jef (Kate Kennedy) is spending her last day tying up loose ends. The film is not cold either, despite being set in a bitter January: its painstaking realization in the rare Super8 format is pleasingly fuzzy.."

Best of times this weekend - off to the premiere of Haar, where all concerned felt the love of the London Film Festival. Great to meet some of the incredible cast that I'd only got to know via 6 months of DX editing and sound post including the mighty @katekenners, @theevamagyar and Balázs Czukor. Got the shivers being in the same room as my bete noir, the Canon DS-8 (aka The Lawn Mower), but managed to make my peace with it after reading Screen Daily's review which mentioned '...sound designer Alasdair Reid’s innovative work. ' - thank you, Fionnuala Halligan 👍 Her review highlighted the fact that @haarfilm '...is a sweet reminder of the power of small crews and a passion for craft.' So true! For me it boiled down to the trust and support I felt every day from director @benhecking and editor @callumread_editor - both wonderful collaborators and human beings. And a reminder for @leo.pinter - hire that sound team again; they were great!

A busy day at the @britishfilminstitute London Film Festival yesterday, with four films watched.

First up was the shot-on-8mm Haar, with the director and two leads doing a post film Q&A. A film about memory and family, the unusual choice of format (shot using not always reliable 50 year old cameras) worked well for the themes of the movie.

Then it was over to Vue West End for Randall Park's Shortcomings, a very funny film about a complete arsehole's dating escapades - featuring lots of "oh it's them" in the cast. it's also the third film I've seen this year, after Return to Seoul and Joyride, about people of east Asian heritage grappling with issues of identity. I think there's some of us who will recognise ourselves in the pretentious cinephilia of the lead, and of his two employees at the movie theatre.

Then it was over to Mayfair for my first visit to the Curzon cinema there - beautiful looking interior, will have to make the effort to go out there in future. I was there to watch The New Boy, by Warwick Thornton, a film about the use of the church in Australia to, as the intro text states, "remove the black" from aboriginal children. It stars a funny and warm Cate Blanchett as the renegade nun running the orphanage, and newcomer Aswan Reid as the titular character. I had to miss the post film Q&A as it was now 8pm, I hadn't eaten lunch, and I had to get back over to the Southbank for the annual surprise film.

And the surprise film turned out to be Michael Mann's Ferrari. The car racing scenes sounded fantastic, though the perhaps unnecessary accents made the dialogue hard to understand at times. I was half way back on the balcony, but the picture was still fantastic - it's just the audio that suffers in that hall (and the seats). There were some shocking scenes of violence, of the kind that came when motor racing involved very little safety precautions, but Mann used them very effectively, even if the story itself felt rather truncated.

Time for (my) Day 4!

#Repost• @haarfilm Poster Drop 🔥

Thanks to @britishfilminstitute for dropping our poster in advance of the World Premiere screening of Haar TONIGHT at 6.30pm at the Prince Charles Cinema - part of the 67th BFI London Film Festival in association with American Express.

Huge thanks to the guys at @alphaville.design (@marauder_midnight & @studiotstella) for producing this phenomenal artwork. We’ve been massive fans of their work for the longest time and they made our job incredibly difficult by producing the most insanely brilliant designs - it was honestly so hard to choose one of them.

Can’t wait for people to see the film - both screenings have sold out but it’s worth reminding people that there is every chance of a return so if you haven’t been pulled into anything else yet keep an eye on the website or try your luck at the venue tomorrow night.
