I join the world and all his nearest and dearest in mourning Paddy Keenan’s loss. Paddy and his music have had a profound impact on mine and countless others’ lives, and the news of his passing has given me pause to reflect. I knew for some time that he hadn’t been well. It’s still hard to imagine a world without him. In my view, the word ‘legend’ gets thrown around far too often. Paddy’s loss marks that of a true legend in his own time. To have known him to any extent, let alone to have been his friend and in his company is among my life’s richest blessings.

For me, as for so very many of us who play Irish pipes, it all started here with Track 1 of the Brown Album. This is the first sounds of the pipes I ever heard, which is the same track playing on this post. I was around nine or ten years old, and knew nothing about what I was hearing. I was spellbound. Maybe some of you are hearing this for the first time yourselves, and I hope Paddy Keenan’s music is every bit as mindblowing for you as it was for Ten Year Old Me…!

Without Paddy Keenan, I wouldn’t be playing pipes. Without Ted Anderson - affectionately known as Uncle Tedly - I wouldn’t still be playing pipes. I met him in 2005 when I first moved to LA and we became fast friends. He introduced me to/connected me with Paddy not long after that when Paddy came to LA.

Ted supplied the Irish Piping world with the best California Cane for decades, and had a major hand in resuscitating Paddy’s playing career after the Bothy Band. Paddy had a stash of his father’s cane that had run out, and he stopped making reeds for a time. After he and Ted met in the early 80s, he was able to get going again.

Paddy would routinely visit Ted usually about once a year after that, going thru his set of pipes and doing all that needed doing. It was one of these visits where I got to be there and spend an entire magical week hanging out with my hero. I was his personal chauffeur to all his gigs in the area, one of which was at a studio in Sebastopol where he and John Doyle played toget by @benjabermusic

Here’s the opening of the slow movement of the 2nd Symphony by Alexander Borodin. Thrilled am I to be playing this gorgeous music for the first time at @sandiegosymphony this week. I had never heard this piece until I saw the wonderful @stefan.dohr playing this solo so beautifully on YouTube. Exciting day here in America’s Finest City…!!
In my humble opinion, Steve Lewis of Chicago makes the very best horns money can buy. My original Lewis horn - SWL340 - has been my one and only instrument since 2014. If you follow this page, you’ve seen and heard this horn a lot! As well as it’s been loved and cared for over the years, it’s still gotten worn down with thin spots, holes and patches. Not a moment too soon, by some kind of cosmic predestined miracle, Steve’s latest creation - SWL382 - found its way to me this morning where I met and played it for the first time with the San Diego Symphony. It’s easily the most beautiful horn I’ve ever held in my hands, and I can’t wait to share its gorgeous sound with all of you! taken in Jacobs Music Center by @benjabermusic

Air: ‘The Bright Lady’

I’m here at the @claggettcenter in Adamstown, Maryland with @audreyleighjaber at the @terpsichoredanceholiday . I was able to get a few quiet moments to record in the beautiful acoustic of the silo here at the Center, which is now used as a sacred space.
