OH +5 is open @dairybarnarts !

The show is a wonderful survey of art from Ohio & it’s 5 bordering states, proving in no uncertain terms that great art is happening in the Midwest.

I tried coach my parents in how to flick me up for a fitpic and it didnt work womp womp.

Photos of cheese, amazing work by @yoosef_mohamadi_ @sally.clegg & @jwclayart , and many other pieces I am remembering that I neglected take photos of. Rats. Go see the show in-person to experience for yourself what Instagram can only present to you as a false memory. taken in The Dairy Barn Arts Center by @benmichalsky

“The Spirit of The Spirit of the Snow”
2025

On view now through early December in the “Visual History of the Unions” exhibition at the Michigan Union. I was asked by @sally.clegg to collaborate with her on this piece, where we restaged a 1939 photo of Michigan student Alice Frayer with her award winning sculpture, “The Spirit of the Snow”. The first slide is our photo, and the second a video of the final piece, a lenticular print of the original photo and ours juxtaposed atop one another. Addition outtakes from our shoot follow these. Here is what Sally had to say about the piece:

“In May 1939, U-M student Alice Frayer was photographed at the Michigan League with her prize-winning sculpture The Spirit of the Snow. Four months later, Nazi Germany invaded Poland. In 2025, U-M Stamps student Ben Michalsky was invited to restage Frayer’s pose with his own sculpture, Profilo Continuo (Testa d’il Dunce)—a riff on Renato Bertelli’s 1933 Profilo Continuo (Testa di Mussolini)—where a directed light throws a telling shadow. The lenticular flips between the two portraits: two students, two thresholds, two shadows.

Fascism is an ultranationalist, authoritarian politics that concentrates power in a single leader and uses censorship and violence to crush pluralism. By the best estimates, fascist regimes in World War II were responsible for roughly sixty-million deaths, most of them civilians.

By juxtaposing 1939 and 2025, this work asks how student artists imagine their futures as authoritarian tides rise—and what our attention, and our shadows, reveal.” taken in Michigan League by @benmichalsky
