“Portrait of a Young American Man Who Has Ostensibly Failed in Life, Has Little-to-No Prospects, and is Now Living at Home, Again” by Ben Michalsky is an experiential installation of sculptural objects and video projection. Situated within contemporary practices of social critique, post-internet art, and the field of current conceptual artists, this project is a result of research and collaboration with multiple professors from different disciplines on semiotics and media theory. Through this project, Ben aims to spur new insights and conversations about the impact of data-driven, algorithmic media cycles on our conceptions of the self, along with the processes of collective myth-making.

This project is currently on display at the @umstamps Perspectives{s} exhibition at the Art & Architecture building on 2000 Bonisteel Blvd. The exhibition will run through May 3, 2025.

This project is funded by an ArtsEngine Student MicroGrant. Learn more about other funded projects at artsengine.umich.edu/previous-projects.
