Introducing our very first new media artist for Hybrid 003: Alison Bennett who will be presenting 'vegetal/digital'.

Bennett has brought together an innovative combination of processes to create awe-inspiring real-time embodied interaction with 3D point-cloud renders of Australian flowers.

The use of a gesture-controlled sensor creates the impression that the work literally turns towards the viewer. This mirrors Bennett's perception that, just as we attuned to plants, the plants are also turning toward us. The interaction design encourages the viewer to slow down and attune to the pulse of plants and computers, inducing an almost meditative state of mind.

Dr Alison Bennett makes photographic and digital artworks that explore themes of connection with the human and non-human, mediated through neurodivergent sensory profile. Works include limited edition prints and site-specific moving image installations. Their work demonstrates a commitment to the magic and agency of images with capacity to generate embodied shifts in perspective.

Their PhD research articulated the expansion of photography from an isolated 2D frame to a networked mesh in the transition to digital. In an interview for Talking Pictures, Bennett proposed that "we are shifting from knowing the world through photographs to finding ourselves enmeshed within the architecture of the image."

As reviewed in The Age newspaper today, 'Networked Flesh' is a work that is shaped by the audience.

"Networked Flesh features a huge ensemble of second-year students dancing on small platforms around Studio 221 while audiences roam freely, viewing an augmented version of the performance through their phones."

Conceived and choreographed by Dr Megan Beckwith for the Now or Never Festival in Melbourne, final performances tonight!

Part of the delight of creating site specific data projection artworks is the dialogue with the affordances of the site. I was worried that this sequence would be too busy and was anticipating I would need to simplify. At the site test last week, facilitated by @littleprojectorcompany , I was astonished to see the building glow and thrum in response to this overlay of kaleidoscoped fish and animated water particles. The work will be public for one night only 6-9pm Saturday 29 Aug as part of Walking Thomastown, organised by @citywhittlesea . I plan to do a livestream on Instagram 7.30-8.00 for those that cannot join us.
