Dumping AND rodents are both symptoms of a broken waste management system. Since last summer's sanitation strike, we've seen a surge in rat populations in Northeast Philly, even in neighborhoods without legacy dumping. Rodents can smell food waste in trash from up to 50 feet away! We support expanding composting across the city to better manage our waste and prevent rat infestations. Follow for more on ending illegal dumping by 2028! taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @bennettcompost

Welcome to Rat-Toberfest! 🐀🍻🥨 Not the fall festival any of us asked for. Philly City Council just called for an urgent response to rat infestations in the Lower Northeast. It’s a serious issue across the city, and we want to talk about what we can do to help.

So, this month, we’re putting rats on the agenda. We’ll be talking about rats, food scraps, common misconceptions, and practical ways we can all make our blocks less inviting to our least favorite neighbors.

Over a billion pounds of pumpkins wind up in landfills every year after #halloween. 👎 We give your pumpkins a second life as the compost that nourishes our community’s gardens, parks and green spaces. 🎃

Learn more about our weekly compost pickup and start composting free! 👉 @bennettcompost

We take your pumpkins back to our yard, where they’re combined with leaves, wood chips, and other organics. We force air through each pile, then let the microbes handle the rest. In 60-90 days, your food waste is gone, and what’s left in its place is compost.

Pumpkins and landfills don’t mix 🚫🎃 Materials in landfills are packed together and break down without oxygen, which releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas responsible for short term global warming. Composting is an alternative that’s turns waste into wealth, while also not polluting.

You can put your pumpkins on top of your bucket for pickup, or smash your pumpkins and put the pieces in your bucket.

The difference composting makes adds up - fast. This is one of countless runs we made last year from homes and community events.

Carving your pumpkin is best for composting! Compost the pulp and seeds, or keep the seeds and toast for a healthy snack.

Note: please remove spray paints and enamel paints from pumpkins before composting.

Stay tuned for community pumpkin smashes, like this one at @thespringgardens_phl!

Smashing pumpkins is not only fun - it’s also great prep for composting!

Hey @grittynhl 🎃 Share your best jack-o-lanterns designs with us! Before you compost!

Happy composting! 🎃🦇🕸️ taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @bennettcompost

It’s officially spooky season! 🧛🎃🕷️💀🕸️👻🦇 Here are five sustainable things you can do this month, that are all completely free:

🎃 Give your pumpkin a second life as compost! Stay tuned for details on pumpkin smashes and other community collections in November. If you’re already a composter, you can add whole pumpkins to your weekly pickup, and smashed pumpkins to your #bennettbucket.

👑 Donate old Halloween costumes to community drives, or put together a neighborhood swap. Be creative and go for something home spun if you have the time and resources. ✂️ If you give us a list of random things lying around the house, we’ll send you a costume idea you can make with nothing but tape, glue and a stapler (seriously, dm us!)

🍂 Leave your leaves! If you have a little back yard, leaves your leaves so the fireflies, ladybugs and native bees have a warm place to hibernate. (You can create a small chickenwire enclosure to keep them in place). If you have any extra leaves, send them our way: you can add landscaping bags of leaves and garden cleanup to your weekly pickup for free in your online account.

🦇 Make DIY decorations, like paper bats copied from a template onto construction paper, or craft a witches broom from foraged twigs and branches collected on a nature walk. Above all, take the time to enjoy your creative time.

🫙 Put your plastic candy wrappers in a plastic bottle, and pack tightly, before throwing out. Encapsulating tiny pieces of plastic like this prevents them from breaking free during trash collection, transport and processing. The fewer pieces of plastic blowing around, the better.

Food scraps are a huge part of Philly’s residential waste, and with no municipal composting program, they end up dumped on sidewalks, landfilled, and incinerated. Carlton Williams reports that 80% of Philly’s 311 dumping reports are for residential dumping. Composting could keep nearly a third of our residential waste out of landfills and incinerators, and prevents dumping before it ever hits the curb. 🍌 Follow us for more posts on systems solutions to ending illegal dumping by 2028! by @bennettcompost

Better waste systems create better resident experiences:

When an apartment or condo building starts composting with us, they do more than divert food scraps from a landfill. Dedicated spaces for wet food waste keeps units cleaner, AND (by extension) your trash room cleaner. Issues like a putrid trash shoots and leaking trash bags disappear in the first months after you make the switch, freeing up your management team to focus on the forward-facing details your residents value most.

Moreover, when a building’s waste areas are clean and organized, residents notice - especially when it comes to putrid smells. It signals care, strengthens confidence in management, and supports the kind of experience people expect from a well-run community, especially in luxury, Class A, and newly renovated properties.

If you manage a multifamily property, let’s build a waste program residents will actually appreciate together.

If you live in an apartment building with a trash room that smells, leaks, overflows, or just feels neglected, DM your property manager this post, and tell them: it’s time to start composting!
