Dumping AND rodents are both symptoms of a broken waste management system. Since last summer's sanitation strike, we've seen a surge in rat populations in Northeast Philly, even in neighborhoods without legacy dumping. Rodents can smell food waste in trash from up to 50 feet away! We support expanding composting across the city to better manage our waste and prevent rat infestations. Food scraps are a huge part of Philly’s residential waste, and with no municipal composting program, they end up dumped on sidewalks, landfilled, and incinerated. Carlton Williams reports that 80% of Philly’s 311 dumping reports are for residential dumping. Composting could keep nearly a third of our residential waste out of landfills and incinerators, and prevents dumping before it ever hits the curb. 🍌 Follow us for more posts on systems solutions to ending illegal dumping by 2028!

Join us! de/composition 1.2: Native Trees, Sonic Roots is an immersive multimedia performance driven by ambient soundscapes, dynamic visuals, narrative storytelling and movement grounded in ecological stories. Real-time audio converted from the bio-electric inputs of trees and worms are merged with live electronic music and Latin folk percussion.

Led by composer and producer June Lopez, alongside narrator and contemporary dance performer Dr. Jamé McCray, with visual artists Samara Talkin and Neil Cippon, this evolving performance spotlights the surrounding environment of the Tookany/Tacony–Frankford Watershed.

I told you I’d never leave you hanging!

This list isn’t exhaustive, but these are the people I’ve been working with and alongside for the last six years in Philly’s sustainability scene.

Many of you have been asking about someone else taking over the shop, and while I don’t have anything concrete to share with you, the people I’m talking to wanted me to let you know that the conversations not dead yet! Keep your eye out here and in the newsletter for any updates if things move forward.

I hope you’ll be able to shop with Ray’s again in the future, but in the meantime here’s a list of a bunch of people to help keep you along the sustainable journey.

MCHARG RESEARCH ASSISTANT SPOTLIGHT!⁠

This summer Research Assistant Abbey Levy (MLA ‘28) aided the McHarg Center in their ongoing Circular Soils project.⁠
⁠
The project focuses on how urban street trees respond to a soil blend that reuses materials otherwise destined for the landfill. The soil was created in partnership with University of Pennsylvania, @olinlabs , @bennettcompost, @bottleunderground , and @philaparkandrec. It is a blend of compost made from Philadelphia food scraps, crushed glass from bottles collected throughout the city, and biochar.⁠
⁠
This research initiative aims to preserve the region’s natural areas, reduce waste, and support urban GSI implementation by producing a waste-based urban soil blend optimized for water quality, infiltration and plant health. Since 2024, 25 trees have been planted in the circular soil on Penn’s campus. ⁠
⁠
Abbey and co-research assistant, Sarah Jane Henman (MLA’28), conducted a rapid tree health assessment on these 25 trees using the Healthy Trees Healthy Cities tool, a tree health monitoring initiative coordinated by The Nature Conservancy and the USDA Forest Service, which supports researchers, managers, and civic ecologists in the protection of trees and forests in communities nationwide. She examined each tree’s finetwig dieback, leaf discoloration, leaf defoliation, crown light exposure, and crown transparency. ⁠
