Rehearsal is always my favorite part of the creative process. Even from 4,000 miles away, it brought me so much joy to see the wildly talented Cheyenne Jackson and Claybourne Elder having a blast rehearsing the song Todd Almond and I wrote. Watch till the end for a little extra something… 😉

I’m definitely not saying that Jonathan Groff winning the Tony for Best Actor is SOLELY due to his performance of the song @therealtoddalmond and I wrote. Yeah... no... I am not saying that at all. Congrats, Jonathan!! by @bentothmusic

As @lindsaymendez has just wrapped up her run in MERRILY, I'm fondly remembering this song cycle lyricist @meghanendresbrown and I wrote for her. Who knew a piece about anarchist Emma Goldman would ALSO become a long-running hit? LOL 😊 by @bentothmusic

Happy closing to the extraordinary cast, crew, creative team, and everyone at the Naturtheater Greifensteine who brought Das Buschgespenst to life this summer.

There is something a little surreal about writing a musical and then watching an entire company of people give it their talent, imagination, energy, and heart night after night. I’m enormously grateful to every person who has been part of this production.

And especially to my wonderful collaborator @birgitsimmler. Birgit, thank you for inviting me into this world, for dreaming this piece up with me, and for being such a generous and inspiring partner throughout the whole adventure. I’m very proud of what we made together.

Wishing the entire company a beautiful final performance today. I’ll be thinking of you all and raising a glass from Berlin.

And while today is a closing, I very much hope it isn’t the end of Das Buschgespenst. I’m excited to see where our little ghost might wander next. ❤️👻

Last day, for now. ❤️

Today is the final day of this first part of our workshop at the Royal Court, and I’m already very excited to come back in a couple of months for the second half.

I’ve loved this theatre for so many years, so there’s been something particularly special about getting to be on the inside of its process for a little while. Badge and all.

A funny thing happened when my host first showed me to the place where I’m staying in Covent Garden. The moment we turned into this little alleyway, I knew I had been here before.

And then it came back to me: just up ahead was the Italian restaurant where I had dinner many years ago, the night after making my West End debut with Mandy Patinkin.

That whole experience had happened rather wildly. Mandy’s regular pianist had an emergency appendectomy, and I was called in at the last minute to take over. Somehow, even for someone with a famously unreliable memory, this little corner of London got branded onto my brain.

So it feels strangely lovely to find myself staying here all these years later, after having lived in London and now returning from my home in Berlin.

And maybe what I like most about the coincidence is how much life has changed in between. I loved music directing then, and I’m grateful that I still occasionally get to do it. But composing for the theater was always my first love, and these days I’m very happy that more and more of my life gets to revolve around exactly that.

I just got back from rehearsal with my music associate, and tomorrow James Fritz and I officially begin our next stretch of development at the Royal Court on the new musical we’re writing together.

Funny what a little alleyway can remember for you.

Not the worst place to write a musical. 🇫🇷

Very happy to be back in the south of France with James Fritz, working away on our new show. We’ve been ridiculously productive so far, with plenty more still to tackle.

Later this week, we swap Provence for London and continue developing the show with the @royalcourttheatre through next week. A pretty wonderful couple of weeks of making things up in unusually nice places. taken in Lacoste, Provence-Alpes-Cote D'Azur, France by @bentothmusic
