There is something that feels quite special everytime that I get to work @capitolstudios this time around recording new songs with @minajoymusic along with @bentothmusic on piano while @markportmann was producing the sessions. @adventureswithgg is the executive producer of this project. To have continuity from our previous sessions @searsoundnyc we decided to go with Capitol's @steinwayandsons piano where I used a pair of @neumann.berlin TLM 170's for the inside of the piano along with a pair of vintage @neumann.berlin KM-74's with custom Watersound electronics. The U-47 on the side of the piano was used as a mono mic that when it's blended in with the other mics it gives me a nice center point without disturbing the general phase of the other mics. For @minajoymusic vocals I used a vintage Neumann U77 with custom power supply electronics. One of the great things about these studios are their Eco Chambers which provide the right amount of eco with a unique texture that only a chamber can capture. When recording acoustic instruments, an engineer's signature becomes apparent in his or her choice of the type of microphone being used and where each microphone is placed to capture an instrument. While microphone technique can be verbally shared and photographed, the actual sound being captured of the instrument, at the end of the day, will change from engineer to engineer. Part of what microphone technique involves, at least in my opinion, is a combination of experience, gut feeling and how we react to the sound that the player is projecting onto the room, the context in which the instrument is playing on the song (accompaniment or as a solo instrument) and what texture is that instrument occupying within the stereo field. Sometimes, we don't know how the arrangement of the song is going to end up sounding like, so we shoot from the hip and we allow a bit of mini options in order to better place the instrument when it comes time to mix the song. For my sessions @searsoundnyc I employed a dual A-B stereo technique for the upcomming album of @minajoymusic. @bentothmusic was behind the keys of this beautiful sounding Steinway piano while @markportmann produced the sessions. The piano was captured with a close pair of @neumann.berlin TLM 170's and a second pair of Vintage @neumann.berlin KM-84's. I decided to place packing blankets around the piano, below the opening of the piano to slightly help the energy of the piano be absorved around the soundboard area for better focus on both mics. I always listen in Mono when summing mics to make sure that there are no major frequencies being cancelled or altered and to find the best balance for both mics while monotoring them in the control room. The resulting sound was open and rich in the low mids with a clear mid range and top end with fast transients and ample headroom. In my opinion, it takes firm courage and conviction to be able to stand in front of a microphone and be able to convincingly transmit a series of emotions that can cover the spectrum from happiness to sadness. Every voice has a distinct signature and each singer requires a different set of parameters to make them feel comfortable within the ambiance of the studio and in what they need hear in their headphones in order for them to perform freely. It is up to us as professionals to find out what is required to help them create a moment that we can record and capture in either magnetic or digital form forever. For the last couple of days I've had the distinct pleasure of recording the very talented @minajoymusic for a new album that is being produced by @markportmann with executive producer @adventureswithgg On Piano accompaniment we had @bentothmusic playing live with Mina featuring a careful sellection of great musical treats. Studio C @searsoundnyc was the acoustic accomplice in this journey. Mina's voice was captured using my vintage @neumann.berlin U77 microphone that I brought all the way from California along with my custom Watersound T-Power supply. I used a Jensen Mic pre-amp along with a GML 8900 compressor straight to the studio's @myteksound A-D converters. Piano was a combination of Neumann TLM 170's (going thru two channels of the Jensen 990 Based Mic Pre) and a distant pair of Vintage Neumann KM-74's where I made use of the studio's Avalon Mic Pre's And EQ's located in their custom analog console. Had a great day today visiting mastering engineer #ronmcmaster @capitolstudios to listen to the first batch of vinyl test pressings for @minajoymusic that @ron.mcmaster mastered at 45 RPM for maximum fidelity. Also in attendance was Brian Kelly from @groove_house to make sure that the test pressings were up to standard. This record has been a true team effort with @markportmann producing the album. It is that time of the year in which the Grammy pre-nomination process is underway. For your consideration is an independent project that was done with a great level of care and attention to detail, the artist's name is Mina and the title of her album is "All Heart". @minajoymusic was accompanied by the Prague FilmHarmonic Orchestra under the direction of Adam Klemens. This is a record that explores the music and sounds that stem from another era under the careful production and arrangements done by @markportmann Other members of the team include accompanist @bentothmusic and famed vocal coach @voicetekron Taking care of every aspect of the project was Executive Producer Lisa Nkonoki @adventureswithgg And @pirripe handled the Vocal Production -Management.
