I am greatly saddened to learn that Jameson Currier passed away over the weekend. He was a good friend, an inspiration, and a source of many a laugh. He was also a terrific author. We met in 2004 at a multi-author reading event to promote I Do/I Don't: Queers on Marriage, published by Suspect Thoughts Press, an emerging powerhouse for queer lit thanks to its partnership with the Gay Book of the Month Club. The event was held at Giovanni's Room, once one of the best gay bookstores. It all seems like a lifetime ago. Twenty-two years have passed, and the field and industry have changed. I had not known Jameson's work before, but this man stood up and read such a powerful story that I was smitten. If he had asked me to bed right afterward, I would have gone. That never happened, but it was the start of a friendship.
Lethe was three years old with just a handful of books. Jameson had already written Dancing on the Moon, a collection published a decade earlier, and then The Haunted Heart. His 1998 novel Where the Rainbow Ends was reviewed in The New York Times. For a decade, Jameson was one of the names writing about gay life during the Plague Years. I don't think he ever had the reach of the Violet Quill authors, which proved to be some of his undoing. And I think that, by the twenty-first century, gay men did not want to read stories about AIDS. They wanted distraction, to forget. Jameson continued to stretch his writing, doing books of speculative fiction (he absolutely loved ghost stories) and even comedy, though it was always tinged with sadness. He remembered how much had been lost and how many lives had been changed.
Jameson decided to start a small gay press of his own, Chelsea Station Editions. Running a small press really is an exercise in patience and frustration, but it gave us something to talk about at a moment's notice. We commiserated over the passing of the old gay bookstores, the antics of authors, and the changing tastes of readers, as genre fiction became what sold while literary fiction, once so important to gay men, became an afterthought on many bookshelves. My hobby has reached 25 years old this month! I'm thrilled to have helped so many authors reach readers. Our books have won a wide variety of awards and been shared with friends, family, and lovers. I hope you read one, too. by @bermanlethe
