Happy Book Birthday!!!

I'm so thrilled that our picture book, Saturday is Pancake Day is out in Aus and NZ today. The illustrations by @dgraybarnnett are a feast for the eyes and the heart. Each time I pick up the book I discover something new. Thanks to the team @scribblekidsbooks for creating such an amazing book.Ā

It’s Saturday morning, and Milo’s been cooking his famously delicious pancakes. But Henry doesn’t feel like pancakes this morning, and Milo and the twins aren’t sure why.

Maybe he feels like something else? Milo and the twins create more and more elaborate dishes, using everything they can find in the cupboards to entice Henry – creations like ā€˜Peanut Butter Flowers’, ā€˜Little Puddings Supreme’, and ā€˜Brussels Sprouts Forget Me Never’ – but nothing does the trick. Perhaps the answer isn’t in the kitchen …

If you would like a copy, please visit your local bookshop, or you can order directly from the publisher, link in bio. by @bernadettejgreen

Reposted from @cbcaustralia Bravo!!! to Bernadette Green whose book Who's Your Real Mum?, illustrated by Anna Zobel and published by Scribble Kids' Books, has been shortlisted for 2021 CBCA Book of the Year: Early Childhood.

Bernadette explains what inspired her to write the book:

"The inspiration came from my children and their experience of having two mums. When they were in primary school, they were asked which of their mums was their real mum. I wanted to answer that question in a way that took some of the pressure off kids from same-sex parents while respecting the natural curiosity in children wanting to understand a family different to their own."

I love Storytime for Grown-ups where us big kids get three picture books read to us. All the books are chosen and read by Micheal Earp, owner of The Little Bookroom. The price of the ticket goes to covering a book to take home. Last night I walked out with Shaun Tan’s Hometown. Other nights I’ve picked up Through the Darkening Sea by Claire Saxby and Peter Cheung, The Mud Princess by Beatrice Alemagna and Ergo by Alexis Deacon and Viviane Schwarz. They’re all written and illustrated beautifully. taken in The Little Bookroom by @bernadettejgreen

Because I was working today and couldn’t visit any bookshops on Love Your Bookshop Day I dropped by two of my favourites earlier in the week. The Little Bookroom in Brunswick and Ramona Books in Northcote and picked up into the Mouth of the Wolf by Erin Gough and Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke. #loveyourbookshopdayau @ramonabookshop @little_bookroom #intothemouthofthewolf #yesteryear by @bernadettejgreen

Some of the bookshops I visited in China. Most of them had a cafe and lots of space for students to study. The first one was about an hour out of Chengdu. It has mirrored ceilings so a bit of an optical illusion but still truly beautiful. My favourite was the 1200 Book Shop in Guangzhou. I could have spent all day there. The last couple of photos are of a bookshop in Chongqing, again very beautiful.

More Chongqing. We went to Graffiti Street and stumbled upon an international graffiti festival with visiting artists choosing a wall for their art with a set time to complete their design. We also stopped into a tea house while we were there. by @bernadettejgreen

I’m travelling in China and I can see why the Tianzi Mountain inspired the setting in the movie Avatar. It’s magical. We spent a whole day on the mountain and got to see the quartz-sandstone pillars emerge as the mists lifted. taken in Tianzishan, Hunan, China by @bernadettejgreen

I'm nearly at the end of my two weeks at Varuna, and I'm happy with what I've done so far. I finished marking up a print copy of the entire fantasy middle grade novel I'm working on, and I've started to reintegrate those edits into the rest of the manuscript. I've been on some great walks along the way, had a few wines, endless cups of tea, great chats and a fair amount of procrastination where I pondered the big stuff like how pretty is this joinery (I think that's what it's called) and how a crochet lap rug really does keep you warm on a cold Katoomba morning and I've taken far too many photos of the view outside the studio I'm writing in and a hundred different angles of the writers house. All part of the process!

I arrived at Varuna on Monday. It was so special walking up the driveway and seeing the big yellow house again. I'm working on a middle-grade fantasy novel that I started fourteen years ago when my youngest daughter was about four and asked me the names of girl super heros. I felt we could definitely do with more.

When I started the novel, I hadn't quite realised how tricky fantasy can be to write. Which is why I keep picking it up and putting it down for a shorter project, but I always come back.

One of my favourite events at Sorrento Writers Festival was Love, Friendship, Devotion: Queer Fiction Comes of Age with writers discussing their latest work,Ā  @madeleine_gray_ Chosen Family, @sofielagunabooks The Underworld and debut author @samsullivanwrites with his historical fantasy novel, The Red Winter. I'm going to read them all starting with Chosen Family. Well, once my partner has finished with it. She can't put it down, which says a lot as the last book she read was in lockdown.
