POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Thank you to everyone who came to my book launch yesterday - as I said, I know it was a toss-up between @readingskids and Taylor’s nuptials at Madison Square Garden and I happen to think those at mine made the right call 🤭

HUGE thanks to my friend, colleague and a favourite author - @karen__comer who launched me 🚀 so beautifully and with such kindness for my work ❤️ and thanks to Annalise who played photographer and publicist 🙏 also thanks to Erin who also captured some wonderful photos for me! 👏

Cupcakes were had (they never transport well, but they were divine!) — with thanks to my @hachettekidsanz team for all they did behind the scenes ❤️ and to Holly especially and epically!

So grateful to @readingsbooks booksellers - absolute stars!

And just to everyone who made the most of a surprisingly sunny (if chilly) Melbourne Saturday arvo to come out in support. Thank you!

I was particularly chuffed that in launching, I got to nerd out on the history of my WWI middle grade and do a little show-and-tell of the photos from that time, that inspired the story. Mainly: photographs of Victorian schoolboys who, as was mandated, had to join their school cadets as soon as they turned 12 and learn how to shoot a rifle, and bayonet. Contrasted with the photographs of German “enemy alien” prisoners in their costumed splendour, from the many plays they put on to stave off boredom and find some memory of humanity. I thought there was a story somewhere in that spectrum …

and so; ‘Shakespeare in the Orchard’ is now available early at @readingsbooks and everywhere else as of Tuesday July 7.

Thank you ❤️🍎❤️

📚 World Read Aloud Day 📚

The Guardian Australia’s best children’s picture book poll has me thinking about how often adults reach for legacy or popular titles — rather than considering the incredible contemporary options available. Reading a recent article by Kate Temple @katejoltemple and listening to the ever wise kids book advocate @ohcreativeday made me think about creating this post. I’m also always about choosing Australian books where possible so here are some swaps you might like to consider!

World Empathy Day 🌏💛
Picture books have the power to grow kinder hearts—I pulled only a few favourite titles for this reel but I’d argue that the majority of picture books help foster empathy. I’ve selected Australian titles in honour of World Empathy Day but there are so many brilliant titles that show children compassion, tolerance and understanding.

Through rich storytelling, diverse voices, and emotional depth, picture books help children understand feelings, see different perspectives, and build empathy—one page at a time.

Whether it’s a story about fairness, friendship, identity, culture or courage, each book opens a window to another world—and helps young readers better navigate their own.

📚 Let’s raise readers who care deeply, listen closely, and act kindly - we need it now more than ever.
