🇨🇺 How is a nation shaped by the images we create of it? On the occasion of @bertdanckaert’s exhibition El Jardín de los Cerezos (@plus_one_projects), we bring together two iconic visions of Cuba on the big screen.

Agnès Varda’s SALUT LES CUBAINS (1963) brings the revolution dynamically to life through a rhythmic montage of 1,500 photographs. Mikhail Kalatozov’s SOY CUBA (1964) follows with a monumental, visually stunning epic.

In between the screenings, film professor @philippemeers and photographer Bert Danckaert dive into a conversation about the power and manipulation of the cinematographic image.

These ten small works form the prologue and first act of the 'play' staged by the exhibition 'El Jardín de los Cerezos'. The photographs were taken during my first trip to Havana in 2010 and show façades: the set against which the story unfolds. They are the traces of what was once a utopian political dream, a dream that has turned into a nightmare.
Today it is not only Cuba that stands on the edge of the abyss; we are all witnessing a sick spectacle of flailing figures of power. We find ourselves inside a construction that is not our own, as if we had walked into the wrong theatre.

Deze tien kleine werken vormen de proloog en het eerste bedrijf van het 'toneelstuk' dat de tentoonstelling 'El Jardín de los Cerezos' verbeeldt. De foto's ontstonden tijdens mijn eerste reis naar Havana in 2010 en tonen gevels: het decor waartegen het verhaal zich afspeelt. Het zijn de sporen van wat ooit een utopische politieke droom was, een droom die tot nachtmerrie is verworden.
Vandaag staat niet alleen Cuba aan de rand van de afgrond; we zijn met z'n allen getuige van een ziek schouwspel van spartelende machtsfiguren. We bevinden ons in een constructie die niet de onze is, alsof we de verkeerde theaterzaal zijn binnengestapt.

The series began in 2022 with a personal observation: Her daughter and her daughter’s friends (who were 14 years old when the project started) are completely immersed in a visual culture shaped by smartphones. Rather than staging scenes, James chose to capture their real daily lives, filled with TikTok videos, selfies and constant messaging. #indiephotobooks photobookstore #photobooklovers by @bertdanckaert

The world is on fire, and we wonder where it’s all heading. Meanwhile, we sit at café terraces, go shopping and dance. Myself included.

That’s precisely why Bert Danckaert’s work resonates with me. With Cuba and its dream of a new society as a backdrop, he shows us the theatre of the world. Schools, churches and cinemas become stages where ideas are passed on, where hope takes shape, but where power is also exercised. His images are about life there, but just as much about us. About the future we imagine and how much we can truly shape a society.

I’d love for you to come and look. To take in the beauty, but also pause and consider what lies beneath it. A moment for reflection.
