🇨🇺 How is a nation shaped by the images we create of it? On the occasion of @bertdanckaert’s exhibition El Jardín de los Cerezos (@plus_one_projects), we bring together two iconic visions of Cuba on the big screen.

Agnès Varda’s SALUT LES CUBAINS (1963) brings the revolution dynamically to life through a rhythmic montage of 1,500 photographs. Mikhail Kalatozov’s SOY CUBA (1964) follows with a monumental, visually stunning epic.

In between the screenings, film professor @philippemeers and photographer Bert Danckaert dive into a conversation about the power and manipulation of the cinematographic image.

9 OCT, 16:00 / 20:00

The Poodles. Photos by Charlotte Lybeer.
Matanna # 8. For this series Charlotte Lybeer photographed dogs, more specifically the poodle, a dog breed traditionally associated with intelligence, friendliness, playfulness, and responsiveness. Moreover, the poodle’s visual aesthetic—with its stylized coat and theatrical presence—contributes to a rich visual language that both intrigues and amuses.
The photographic approach within this project lies at the intersection of still life and classical portraiture. In collaboration with the owner, an interior setting is created in which the dog occupies a central, almost monarchical position. This “staging” functions as a podium or throne, placing the animal literally and figuratively in the spotlight. Dog rule indeed. #photobooklovers #signedbooks #limitededition #artphotography www.matanna-editions.com

The series began in 2022 with a personal observation: Her daughter and her daughter’s friends (who were 14 years old when the project started) are completely immersed in a visual culture shaped by smartphones. Rather than staging scenes, James chose to capture their real daily lives, filled with TikTok videos, selfies and constant messaging. #indiephotobooks photobookstore #photobooklovers
