Next year, Endless Gratitude will celebrate its twentieth anniversary. For almost two decades, the festival has stood for a wealth of musical experiences, with a common denominator that seems to be concerts by artists who continually experiment with form and content. In some cases because they are not yet entirely familiar with their own artistic voices, and in others simply because that is how their working methods operate.

That grassroots feeling is still what prevails at Endless Gratitude. And it is what made my three days at Kildevæld Kulturcenter at Østerbro, where the Festival of Endless Gratitude took place something quite special. The feeling that you are not buying a ticket to a perfectly polished programme of musical experiences, but rather to a living workshop, a melting pot full of works in progress.

Maria Bertel for Festival of Endless Gratitude 2026!

Maria Bertel is a Danish trombone player and composer who’s been doing the rounds in the Copenhagen music scene since the late 2000s, where she co-founded the venue Mayhem and the artist collective Eget Værelse.

Bertel combines her acoustic instrument and tonal range with amps and varying degrees of distortion, creating an output that draws inspiration from drone and noise music. The raw amplification makes audible what normally goes unheard, and physical movements, metal and breath become a swirling part of her compositions. Changing organic patterns emerge, with tiny sounds appearing brutally clear as well as the range of overtones of the instrument.

Apart from her work as a solo artist, she performs and composes in groups like the notorious four piece noise rock band Selvhenter and improvised noise duo Nina Garcia & Maria Bertel. She has also collaborated with acts such as Tashi Dorji, Jooklo Duo, Nick Klein & Valentina Magaletti.

The band Selvhenter was founded in 2010 by trombonist Maria Bertel, saxophonist Sonja LaBianca, violinist Maria Diekmann, and drummers Jaleh Negari and Anja Jacobsen. In 2017, Maria Diekmann left the group, and Selvhenter continued as a quartet.

Selvhenter’s sound is driven by a deep fascination with sonic textures, rhythmic displacements and polyrhythms, acoustic and electronic melodies, hard-hitting compositional choices, improvised beauty, and a sheer joy of creating and performing music. Selvhenter has played concerts both in Denmark and internationally. The group is also the nucleus of the artist collective Eget Værelse, which houses the members’ solo projects as well as collaborations such as Valby Vokalgruppe, SOLW, Nina Garcia & Maria Bertel, and G.E.K.
