French wedding traditions emphasize family, elegance, and community. French weddings begin with faire-part (formal invitations) and pre-wedding parties called enterrement de vie de garçon/jeune fille, celebrating the end of single life.

The civil ceremony at the town hall (mairie) is the only legally recognized marriage in France. The bride and groom often arrive together, accompanied by their témoins (witnesses), who sign the official marriage registry. Afterward, the couple receives a livret de famille, a document that records family milestones.

Following the ceremony, guests attend the vin d’honneur, a cocktail-style reception with champagne and canapés. It’s a way to include more acquaintances before the formal dinner. If changing locations, a car procession with honking horns is common.

The repas de noces (wedding meal) is a lavish affair starting around 9 PM, featuring multiple courses and lasting into the early morning. Instead of a tiered cake, couples serve a pièce montée, a tower of cream-filled profiteroles. Guests often receive dragées (sugar-coated almonds) symbolizing health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity.
