From there, we’ll visit your space for a pre-survey - a chance for our design and installation team to walk it with you, understand its character, and quietly take care of all the practical details behind the scenes.

Materials with meaning.

Our new calling cards for sister company @berts.co have arrived - a small piece of printed matter, but one that reflects the thinking behind the wider project.

The paper stock comes from @favinipapers - who incorporate micronized almond and hazelnut shells into their paper, replacing up to 15% of virgin cellulose with agricultural waste - a considered move towards more circular production.

They were printed by Arthur at @calverts_london , our local print cooperative, whose longstanding commitment to social and environmental justice makes them a brilliant fit.

And the design comes courtesy of @_studiopasso , who translated the BERTS ethos into something restrained, elegant and quietly confident. by @berts.co

Salvaged timber with stories to tell.

This little study cabin is clad in reclaimed boards that bring with them warmth, history + quiet character.

Choosing reclaimed over new is not only better for the environment, but brings a distinctly British sense of character - weathered, grounded and beautifully imperfect. by @berts.co

We’re really grateful to have been invited to walk Andy Goldsworthy’s Hanging Stones trail - a quiet, immersive route that sharpens your attention and left all three of us in total awe.

We’re sharing only a few subtle, internal glimpses - and leaving the rest for whoever is lucky enough to find it.

[ Pt 1 ]

Once a year, we step away from the day-to-day to check our compass - to slow down, listen properly, and make sure BOX 9 + BERTS is being led by our principles, not simply the pace of deadlines.

It isn’t a “retreat” but a practice: realigning our shared values, naming what we’re protecting + agreeing how we want to move through the year - with care, clarity, and intention.

This time, our pause took us back to Yorkshire - exploring new opportunities for @box9design + @berts.co , and doing the quieter work too: reflecting on how we put our values into practise and how we invite calm, considered growth.

In the studio, it’s often the smallest things that shape how we work.

Across both @box9design + @berts.co a pen from @tomsstudio lives on each of our desks - chosen for its weight, balance + the pleasure of using something that simply works, without the familiar irritation of pens running dry.

For us, this is about practising what we preach.

Changing ingrained habits where we can - not just through the larger decisions in our designs and specifications, but in the everyday tools we reach for without thinking. We no longer buy or throw away plastic pens. Instead, we’ve chosen to invest a little more time, care, + money up front in objects that are made to last.

They cost a little more. They take a little longer to refill. They ask for a bit of looking after. But if we can’t make these small shifts in our own daily lives, it feels hard to ask our clients to do the same on a much larger scale.

These principles sit at the heart of our work: use less, choose well, and design objects and spaces to last a lifetime - made by people who care about the impact they leave behind.

Our first Impact Report is now live.

BERTS began with a simple intention: to take decades of experience designing homes and hospitality spaces, and distil it into a more thoughtful way of building - one that puts people and planet first.

This report shares how we design + manufacture our cabins today, and how we’re holding ourselves accountable to do better tomorrow.

For us, impact isn’t a single moment or a set of fixed metrics - it’s a continuous process of learning, measuring, refining, and improving year on year.

Much of this work has been quietly underway for a long time, shaped by care, curiosity, and responsibility.

Submitting our B Corp application today helps give structure, clarity, and momentum to that journey - not as a finish line, but as a commitment to keep moving forward.

We’re grateful to everyone who has shaped this work with us so far, and we’re excited to keep building with intention.
